The Basic Fantasy Field Guide Volume 1, Release 44 -- September 23, 2023: After another editing round and the un-borking of the flow, this is at last a print release candidate for volume 1. If it stands unchallenged for a week, it goes out as the new print version! Download

Despite all the delays, I still want this accelerated; if it stands unchallenged until 9/13/2023 it will become the new print release. I'm specifically looking for flow issues at this point, as I feel the book is pretty solid otherwise. Download

3rd Edition Core Rules r107 Finnish Translation, Version 7 -- September 05, 2023: Seppo Raudaskoski has updated the Finnish translation of the 3rd Edition Core Rules. I (Chris Gonnerman) also adjusted formatting, and in particular arranged all rules information on a single page. Sadly, this pushed Luigi's artwork to the back page (the license); if this supplement is ever expanded, I'll try for a new layout to focus that art again. Download

Sentient Weapons: A Basic Fantasy Supplement, Release 4 -- July 08, 2023: James Lemon has done the work of revising this supplement, changing the license to CC BY-SA (with the author's consent) as well as making some other format revisions. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 131 -- June 07, 2023: Thanks to Thorin Schmidt for a bunch of errors he pointed out; while fixing them I discovered the cold elemental had a badly-placed image, so I fixed it too. This is now the print release candidate for the 4th Edition of the Core Rules. Download

KH1 The Blackapple Brugh, Release 20 -- June 07, 2023: This is the first print release candidate for the Creative Commons version of this adventure. I've removed the gray boxes, as it's evident that no further art will appear any time soon; but all of the boxes were "optional" so it still looks and flows quite well. Download

DC1 Tales from the Laughing Dragon, Release 25 -- May 31, 2023: So, I found a bunch of art I thought I already had in the module. After fixing that situation, I have arrived at this new print release candidate! Download

DC1 Tales from the Laughing Dragon, Release 24 -- May 31, 2023: This new release has undergone the rearranging of room numbers, done by the author himself. It looks pretty good, but it's not a print release candidate yet... there are too many gray boxes. If you have any interest in drawing a picture for this one, now is the time! Download

KH1 The Blackapple Brugh, Release 19 -- May 31, 2023: This is ALMOST a print release candidate. All the artwork we really needed has arrived, and been integrated into this release; there are still some gray boxes for optional pieces, and anyone who wants to jump in and fill those spaces is welcome! Basic Fantasy Equipment Emporium, Release 31 -- May 29, 2023: Now, this is a print release candidate. Thanks to quick work by James Lemon and Daniel Collins, I believe most of the issues previously noted have been resolved. Check it out and let me know on the forum if you find any problems! Download

Basic Fantasy Equipment Emporium, Release 30 -- May 28, 2023: This is not a print release candidate, not yet. We have three issues I need help with. First, all references to the "Field Guide Volume 1" need to be changed to just "Field Guide" as we have no idea how the CC version will be organized. Second, all page number references to the Core Rules, Field Guide, etc. need to be removed; they may be added back at some later date but for now just need to go. Last, there may still be a few words here or there that are not set in Soutane BF font that need to be found and fixed. Any help in finding these issues would be much appreciated! Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 128 -- May 01, 2023: Well, I have high hopes that this new release with edits from feveredmonk, Thorin Schmidt, Al Vetter, and possibly one or two others I've forgotten will be the last Print Release Candidate before putting the 4th Edition into print. Keep your fingers crossed, and look this one over carefully! Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign, Release 38 -- April 06, 2023: Extensive editing by Al Vetter has resulted in this new release; unfortunately, the editing was extensive enough to break the flow, so this is not a print release candidate. I'll be looking for one new art piece to pull it all back together. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 127 -- April 05, 2023: This new release includes a few more corrections for issues pointed out by Piotr Klimkowicz. Yes, it's another Print Release Candidate. Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign, Release 36 -- March 27, 2023: New art and a little editing has been applied to this book, and it would be a Print Release Candidate except that it still needs one piece of art. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 122 -- March 27, 2023: Fixes to a couple of errors in the credits is literally all that was done between R121 and this new Print Release Candidate. I don't want to jinx it, but we may be getting close. Download

Core Rules 1E Collector's Edition -- March 27, 2023: We've had a Collector's Edition of the Core Rules much as they were first released in hardback on Lulu.com for a while now, but in response to recent demand both paperback and hardback Core Rules 1E (Release 62) books are now available on Amazon.com as well. Please visit the Buy the Rules page for links to those as well as all our currently-available print books. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 118 -- March 24, 2023: A few more very small changes have led to one more Print Release Candidate. Download

Chrysogon's Coterie, Release 18 -- March 24, 2023: This updated release contains some additional artwork and some corrections. The flow is a mess, but as we are waiting for more artwork it's not presently a priority. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 117 -- March 23, 2023: And thanks to James Lemon for finding a bunch more errors, here's one more Print Release Candidate to enter the fray! Download

Basic Fantasy Equipment Emporium, Release 28 -- March 23, 2023: This is the first Print Release Candidate for the new CC BY-SA release of this book. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 115 -- March 21, 2023: A flow issue in the R114 PDF invalidated it as a release candidate; this new Print Release Candidate fixes that issue without (I hope) introducing new ones. It also contains a few new cross-references and one additional bit of artwork. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 114 -- March 20, 2023: A minor error in the Mercenary table has resulted in yet another Print Release Candidate today. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 112 -- March 20, 2023: Several new art pieces, a very few very small edits, and endless flow-hammering has led to this

PRINT RELEASE CANDIDATE

of the 4th Edition of the Core Rules. YES. This could be it. Check it out now! Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign, Release 35 -- March 18, 2023: This new release has much new art, but there are still several bits needed. The gray boxes now have their sizes in inches listed on them. Very little text changed, but I did rename the Wailing Morel back to Shrieker. Download

KH1 The Blackapple Brugh, Release 17 -- March 14, 2023: Thanks to James Lemon for putting together this first CC BY-SA release of this adventure, and thanks to Kyle Hettinger for consenting to the relicensing. This is not a print release candidate, as it is full of gray box placeholders for new art. Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign, Release 34 -- March 05, 2023: This release of BF1 Morgansfort has been completely reflowed, and is in need of additional art; artists are encouraged to look over the PDF for "gray boxes" indicating areas needing illustration, and visit the comments thread on the forum to "claim" spaces they might like to fill. The reflow was necessitated by the font size increase from 9.5 points to 10 points, as discussed on the forum; there should be few if any other changes. Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 111 -- March 03, 2023: Many more small but important edits and a lot of new art have gone into this almost-ready release. Two art pieces are expected, one of which is represented in this print as a gray box; please don't report it as an error, but please look through the book for any other issues that need immediate correction, and thanks! Download

Core Rules 4th Edition, Release 110 -- February 20, 2023: More art and extensive flow-hammering has led to this new release of the 4th Edition. It is not yet a print release candidate; however, I have "nailed down" the flow for all parts of the book except the Monsters section, so I will not accept art for those areas that changes the flow. We are rapidly closing in on a final release! Download

LA1 Terror in Tosasth, Release 21 -- February 20, 2023: Here's the first official Downloads page release of Leon Atkinson's Terror in Tosasth, an adventure series comprised of many small adventures in a common setting. Download

AA2 Adventure Anthology Two, Release 30 -- September 27, 2019: Flow errors that escaped detection in R29 and made it to print resulted in this new print release candidate. Please, please, check this one over for me! Download

The Basic Fantasy Field Guide Volume 1, Release 36 -- September 18, 2019: More edits by Alan Vetter has led to yet another release, but this one isn't a print release candidate; parts of it are a mess, and it will need more layout hammering before it can be printed. But hey, we're probably not done with rewrites anyway. Download

Basic Fantasy Equipment Emporium, Release 24 -- September 18, 2019: NewbieSalmon pointed out on the forum that one of the tables was "lighter" than the others; in fact, it had thinner lines than it should have. This new print release candidate fixes that, and a handful of other borderline issues in a few of the tables. Nothing substantial changed in this release. Download

The Basic Fantasy Field Guide Volume 1, Release 35 -- September 16, 2019: This new release is the result of another layout pass, a few more text edits and corrections, and new art from Francisco Chavez. It might be a print release candidate, who knows? Download

So now, another print release candidate! Download

JN1 The Chaotic Caves by J.D. Neal, Release 24 -- September 04, 2019: James Lemon found a number of issues, including one major one involving the GM's map for the Caves area; also, monster XP values were not given, which was not a standard at the time JN1 was originally release but is now expected. Correcting these items led to this new print release candidate. Download

Basic Fantasy Equipment Emporium, Release 22 -- September 03, 2019: James Lemon found a bunch more little details that needed fixed, and while fixing them Chris Gonnerman found even more and fixed them too. So, here's another print release candidate. Download

AA2 Adventure Anthology Two, Release 26 -- August 26, 2019: Zaozabob provided two new pieces of art for this multimodule, and then Chris Gonnerman, unsatisfied with the results from vigorous use of the layout hammer, got out the layout maul and prepared this first print release candidate! Download

CS1 Castle by the Sea, Release 20 -- August 20, 2019: There are no textual changes in this version; our entire proofing staff (James Lemon and Al Vetter) have already blessed r19 of this book. However, additional art by Zaozabob, filling in some of the worst white spaces, has resulted in this new, hopefully final print release candidate. Download

AA2 Adventure Anthology Two, Release 25 -- August 19, 2019: Despite extensive layout-hammering and map tweaking, and a little bit more art thanks to Zaozabob, this is still not a print release candidate... but it's close, very close. Download

AA2 Adventure Anthology Two, Release 24 -- August 16, 2019: Edits by James Lemon, new art by Zaozabob, and some layout and graphic fixes by Chris Gonnerman have led to this new release. It's not quite there yet; more art is coming, and some maps need some love, but it's getting closer! Download

As usual, please download this one and check it over thoroughly, and report any issues in the comments thread! Download

Note that this version also has a front cover using public domain artwork but Russian artist Victor Vasnetsov. Download

JN2 Monkey Isle by J.D. Neal, Release 20 -- July 05, 2019: This new print release fixes just two minor issues: misaligned checkboxes on page 16. I've reviewed it personally and gone ahead and put it out on Amazon, and I'll be updating the Lulu copies soon. Download

Basic Fantasy Equipment Emporium, Release 17 -- June 19, 2019: This release includes revisions by Chris Gonnerman and three new art pieces by Jeff Wrbelis. It's not a print candidate yet, as most of the text still needs a review, but it's getting closer. Download

Basic Fantasy Equipment Emporium, Release 15 -- June 08, 2019: This new release of the Equipment Emporium includes revisions by James Lemon and liberal use of the layout hammer by Chris Gonnerman. 3rd Edition Core Rules French Translation, Version 78 -- September 11, 2018: Here is the French translation of the Core Rules, now updated to Release 107. While this one isn't perfect, I'm calling it a print release candidate, as it might just be good enough to print. Download

New Races: A Basic Fantasy Supplement, Release 2 -- August 31, 2018: James Lemon has prepared this revised version of R. Kevin Smoot's supplement. The Kappa has become the Chelonian, and monster descriptions previously found here are now in the Field Guide. Also, relevant art pieces originally found in the Field Guide have been included here. Here is the first fully laid-out version; it's not a release candidate, as I know I need to spend some more time on the layout before it's finalized, but this release should be fully usable. Enjoy! Download

James D. Jarvis' Character Sheet, Version 4 -- July 17, 2018: James has updated his popular character sheet for 3rd Edition to be compatible with R107 of the rules. Download

Equipment Emporium, Release 13 -- May 16, 2018: This updated release includes a very few text edits, and a bunch of new artwork by Borgar Olsen and John Ciarfuglia. The Basic Fantasy Field Guide 2, Release 33 -- May 15, 2018: Release 32 of this book was made on the forum; this new release is basically that work as edited by James Lemon, with layout corrections and further edits by Chris Gonnerman. We are a long way from print as yet, but this version should be much improved over the previous official release. Download

CS1 Castle by the Sea, Release 14 -- March 19, 2018: This new release includes expanded introductory text for Castle Under the Sea, as well as a long-overlooked piece of artwork by KJ O'Brien. Still quite a ways to go before this one is in print, but we're definitely making progress! Download

Equipment Emporium, Release 12 -- March 01, 2018: This is the first release of this supplement in a printable form; from now on, it won't say "A Basic Fantasy Supplement" but rather will be presented as a full book of rules. But this is a ways away from being a print release; much more to do before that day arrives. Download

The Basic Fantasy Field Guide, Release 31 -- February 15, 2018: This updated release of the original Field Guide contains edits by Chris Gonnerman. The text of some monsters was changed for clarity (but not for content), and some layout features have been changed for consistency with the new Field Guild 2. We are a long way yet from a new print release, so don't get too excited. Download

The Basic Fantasy Field Guide 2, Release 31 -- February 15, 2018: Here is the first "official" Downloads-page release of the second volume of the Basic Fantasy Field Guide series. While the book is still in development, it is now considered "complete" and thus ready to appear on the main site. Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign, Release 27 -- January 22, 2018: A few minor errors led to a revision of this module, and the revisions broke the flow, and then Bruce Ripple provided some excellent artwork to add to the mix. Also, the Olde Island Fortress maps have been redone in a new, rotated format, and placed after the key rather than in it, in keeping with our normal layout. This is a new print release candidate, though I am not bumping the edition due to the very minor nature of the changes. Download

BF3 Strongholds of Sorcery, Release 38 -- October 23, 2017: So a week after releasing this multimodule in print, Jose Kercado let me know the maps for Thaumerion's Tower were missing. GAH. No idea how we all missed this rather significant issue. So this release adds the missing maps. I also worked over the flow, incorporating some extra artwork to correct issues with the layout that were not obvious until I saw the book in print. This is a print release candidate; if we don't find anything wrong with it, we'll get it up in print on the weekend. Download

You can see his work particularly in Castle D'Angelo and Tower of Light. Layout has been hammered on and should be good; this is a print release candidate. BF3 Strongholds of Sorcery, Release 36 -- September 25, 2017: James Lemon took on the monumental job of editing this release, and now it's ready for you all to look at! This is the first print release for this module, so go over it carefully everyone... both textual errors and flow issues should be called out to me right away. If this version stands without any reported problems for one week, it will become a print release! Download

This is not exactly a print release candidate... I'd accept artwork to fill in some of the blank spaces, for example. But the text is in what is probably its final form, so a print release candidate is right around the corner. Download

AA2 Adventure Anthology Two, Release 21 -- September 14, 2017: This release includes improved maps for Wulfric's Tomb, done by Borgar Olson, as well as editing by James Lemon. Download

DC1 Tales from the Laughing Dragon, Release 18 -- June 23, 2017: This release adds some missing monster stats noted on the forum by Tommi Brander and corrected by James Lemon. Layout has been worked over, and honestly, improved. This may be a print release candidate. Download

Sentient Weapons: A Basic Fantasy Supplement, Release 3 -- April 24, 2017: I've revised this one again. After a long period of contemplation, I've realized my deconstructivist take on the "intelligent swords" of old was not such a good idea. This new revision restores much of the flavor of the classic version. Download

New Spells Supplement, Release 6 -- April 23, 2017: This is the stripped version mentioned previously. It's now down to the size and content coverage that I intended in the first place. Download

Core Rules 3rd Edition PDF with Bookmarks -- December 17, 2014: Ian Generic sent me a bookmarked version of the Release 97 Core Rules PDF, which I have added to the site. An issue in printing at Lulu means that the print-ready PDF is slightly different (graphics on page 109 are arranged differently) in the current PDF than in the bookmarked version, but they are otherwise identical; for this reason I've left the print release version up alongside the bookmarked version. The Basic Fantasy Field Guide, Release 21 -- December 13, 2014: R. Kevin Smoot alerted me to a number of minor issues with the print release, necessitating this release. Core Rules 3rd Edition (Release 97) -- December 02, 2014: Forum user xoriel77 discovered a small, long-standing error in the text of the spell Charm Person. AA1 Adventure Anthology One, Release 14 -- November 29, 2014: James Lemon and J.D. Neal found a bunch of things that needed to be corrected in this multimodule; I've taken their final version and fixed up the flow, and if nothing else is found this will become the new print release in a week or so. The Basic Fantasy Field Guide, Release 19 -- November 24, 2014: I really didn't like the flow of the previous release. I'd rather have excess whitespace than a choppy layout. So here's a new, hopefully final release. Download

The Basic Fantasy Field Guide, Release 18 -- November 22, 2014: And then came J.D. Neal, with a bag full of things that really needed to be fixed. While I was in there, I only rewrote two or three more monsters. Surely someday this will be done... Download

The Basic Fantasy Field Guide, Release 17 -- November 22, 2014: So I made an R16 to fix a couple of minor things, pushed it to CreateSpace, and discovered that many of the images were too low resolution. This release fixes that, and will very likely be the final print release. Download

Core Rules 3rd Edition (Release 92) -- November 15, 2014: So forum member Omote pointed out an erroneous page number reference, which means I have to put out a new version. I took the opportunity to add a few items to a freshly-reorganized Equipment list, and to reformat one page of monsters that was really bugging me. Download

Core Rules 3rd Edition (Release 91) -- November 14, 2014: It was pointed out to me on Google+ that the affect of Wisdom on saving throws, mentioned briefly where Wisdom is explained, was not detailed anywhere in the rules. So this release remedies that, as well as correcting a minor issue with the statblock of one of the dinosaurs (pointed out on the forum). Download

The Basic Fantasy Field Guide, Release 14 -- November 14, 2014: A few changes suggested on the forum, and a few more very minor layout changes. Download

The Basic Fantasy Field Guide, Release 13 -- November 13, 2014: So now, third print release candidate. Very, very minor layout corrections is all I did this time. Download

Core Rules 3rd Edition (Release 86) -- November 07, 2014: This is the first print release candidate for the 3rd Edition! The changes are extremely minor, mainly consisting of an updated Table of Contents and Alphabetical Index. If this release goes unchallenged (i.e. uncorrected) for at least a week, it becomes the final print release! Download

Core Rules 3rd Edition (Release 85) -- November 07, 2014: This new release adds a couple of small art pieces and a new half-page piece called "Hobgoblin Ransom" by Alexander Cook. With this release, the layout of 3rd Edition is basically set in stone; the next release will correct the table of contents, and will be the first "final release candidate." Download

Download

Neal, Release 7 -- April 22, 2011: From the author's notes: "Besides technical corrections (spelling, grammar, punctuation): I saw that I was trying to overcomplicate the module so my goal was to simplify some things. I simplified the map icons to make it more legible and easier for the DM to do their own custom edits, and eliminated some of the excess numbering (such as undefined ruins). Reduced village placements and renamed a few. And eliminated some unneeded explanations and details I was adding for no good purpose. Added a fantasy creatures random encounter table, dumped the glacial encounter table and worked on the others." Download

Gnomes: A Basic Fantasy Supplement, Release 2 -- November 08, 2007: These new revised rules for the Gnome race now include a new combination class, the Magic-User/Thief. Download

Secondary Skills Supplement -- October 18, 2007: I have finally formatted Ray Allen's Secondary Skills article, and here it is: Download

Simone Felli's Character Sheet -- September 11, 2007: Simone Felli has submitted a nice landscape-format character sheet, in PDF and OpenOffice.org Draw format. Download

Phil Morris' Character Sheet -- August 05, 2007: Phil has submitted his very old-school double-sided character sheet for download. Download

New Spells Supplement -- July 11, 2007: Already, a new revision of the New Spells supplement. Download

New Spells Supplement -- July 10, 2007: Here are many of the new spells created in the Dragonsfoot.org forums. Also included are the rules for 7th level spells for Magic-Users and Clerics. This is an early draft version! Download

James D. Jarvis' Character Sheet -- July 06, 2007: James has submitted his excellent character sheet for download. Download

Core Rules 1st Edition (Release 63) -- July 05, 2007: Well, here are the new "final" rules. This release contains a great many very small changes; omitting the basic grammar and spelling corrections, here's what has been corrected.

All the changes listed above were provided by one proofer, Benedict. Also, Nick Bogan supplied a new version of the maneuverability rules, and I revised the monsters section to be consistent with the new rules. Download

New Forms by Scott Abraham -- July 02, 2007: I've just uploaded four new form PDF's created by Scott Abraham: an Adventure Log, an Adventure Sheet, a Creature Sheet, and a Game Master's Screen. Download

Core Rules Cover Source and PDF -- February 22, 2007: I've posted a source document (OpenOffice.org ODT) and a PDF for the covers, front and back, for the core rules. These covers have been reduced to leave a half inch left and right margin (and proportional top and bottom margins) to accomodate printing on standard home printers. Download

Core Rules 1st Edition (Release 62) -- February 17, 2007: That's right... these are the FINAL rules! (For some definition of "final...") This core rule set contains a few minor changes, and a few more signatures. Really, not much has changed, and that's good... because, if nothing significant is found in the next week, this version goes to Lulu.com! Download

Core Rules Release 61 -- February 11, 2007: A correction has been made to the Combat text, courtesy of new proofreader Benedict Wolf. Proofreader Serge Petitclerc found a bunch more errors, which are all corrected now; this includes the missing rules for item saving throws. Dragonsfoot user Eldrad Wolfsbane suggested variable natural weapon damage for dragons, which I have implemented in this version. Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign, Release 8 -- February 05, 2007: This new release includes details of the standard version of the Tomb (the last room in the Old Island Fortress), as well as two alternate versions (to keep players who have read the intro story guessing). The alternate versions were suggested by Chuck Schoonover and Mark Goss. Download

Core Rules Release 60 -- February 03, 2007: This release includes only minor changes, mainly the insertion of additional public domain artwork. Download

Core Rules Release 59 -- February 01, 2007: New contributor Arthur Reyes has provided additional explanatory text for the Saving Throws section. New contributor Nazim N. Karaca carefully analyzed the price, weight, and damage figures of a number of weapons, and provided well-considered changes to the price and weight of some of them. Playtester Chuck Schoonover pointed out several errors in the rules, including serious errors in the Wall of Stone and Wall of Iron spells, which I have corrected. New proofreader Serge Petitclerc found a few more really annoying little errors, which are now fixed.

This release is being presented "Lulu.com ready" with covers removed and resolution set to 300dpi. This makes the files a lot bigger... you've been warned! Owing to stability issues related to that size change, the OpenOffice.org download has been broken into two sections; I'm using a PDF merge tool to put the resulting PDFs together.

This is the last major change before the print version! (yay!) Download

Jesters: A Basic Fantasy Supplement, Release 2 -- January 29, 2007: Brendan tells me this is the final version of the Jesters Supplement. Enjoy! Download

Assassins: A Basic Fantasy Supplement, Release 1 -- January 27, 2007: Here at long last is Eric C. Medder's rules for Assassin class. Download

Gnomes: A Basic Fantasy Supplement, Release 1 -- January 27, 2007: After a few questions on the subject, I have put together a "first cut" at Gnomes for BFRPG. I don't consider this finished, but it is good enough to playtest. Download

Jesters: A Basic Fantasy Supplement, Release 1 -- January 26, 2007: Here is the first version of Brendan Falconer's rules for the Jester class. I have included his notes at the end, with my commentary added in red. Please post your own commentary in the Dragonsfoot.org thread in the Workshop (The Olde Dungeoneer's Almanack). Download

Core Rules Release 58 -- January 11, 2007: The Halfling Fighter/Thief has been eliminated from the rules, as there is little or no good reason to play one. Numerous small corrections have been made, thanks to the able proofing of Daryl Burns. New dice photos have been inserted, courtesy of Kevin Cook at dicecollector.com. We are another small step closer to print publication... Download

Core Rules Release 57 -- January 02, 2007: Many, many small changes in this revision, courtesy of Daryl Burns. In particular, the missing details for the Black Pudding are now present. This release is also the first to use the new release numbering system. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.56 -- December 27, 2006: This release incorporates numerous corrections suggested by James Roberts (in the Spells section) and Daryl Burns (in the Treasure section). Also included is the new Magic Jar text, clarified after extensive discussion on Dragonsfoot, and a few other items also hashed out there. With this release, I'm freezing sections 1-3; no text appearing prior to the Adventure section will be touched, excepting only the most egregious of errors. The Treasure section is, in my opinion, pretty solid, but as Daryl has indicated that he plans to do some further work there, I'll hold off on freezing it until next release. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.55 -- November 29, 2006: Many, many changes:

Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.7 -- November 07, 2006: Yet another release with Old Island Fortress updates from Mark Goss and myself. Most of the rooms are filled in now; I have just a few more to complete and this part will be complete! Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.6 -- October 15, 2006: Another release with Old Island Fortress updates from Mark Goss... you'll just have to read it if you are curious. Download

Mike Hill's Character Sheet Updated -- October 15, 2006: Mike submitted an updated version of his A4 character sheet (revised after his players used it for the first time). Download

Mike Hill's Character Sheet Posted -- October 08, 2006: Mike Hill has submitted a nice PDF character sheet; it's A4 rather than letter, but of course Acrobat will scale it to fit your paper (and if you use A4 paper normally anyway, all the better). Download

Core Rules Release 2006.54 -- September 27, 2006: New explanatory text for saving throws has been added at the behest of Dragonsfoot user olaberg. Remaining monster XP values have been filled in, and the Elementals are completed at last.

This is it, guys... this text is final. I won't accept any more complaints of "this is broken" without replacement text being provided; put your money where your mouth is, so to speak. This is the version that will be printed. Of course, proofing comes first... Download

New Domain Name: BASICFANTASY.ORG -- January 01, 2006: Yes, I did at last register a domain name for the Basic Fantasy rules. Here's hoping someone likes them besides me.

Update: In a fit of stupidity I failed to collect the download statistics file correctly; thus, download stats for all BFRPG projects from late Feb on are lost. Sometimes I can be really stupid...

Update Part II: Some of the stats have been recovered; the numbers are at least a reasonable approximation of facts now, except for a few of the newest items.

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.5 -- September 23, 2006: Still more of the Old Island Fortress filled in by Mark Goss, including a couple of rooms with nasty surprises... Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.4 -- September 19, 2006: A few more updates to Morgansfort proper, including the missing smithy as well as names for some of the NPCs, all courtesy of Mark Goss. I've also completed the reformatting of the wandering monsters section of the Nameless Dungeon, so that it no longer requires landscape format. Download

Fighter Subclasses: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0 -- September 17, 2006: This article by William Smith provides "basic" versions of the Barbarian, Paladin, and Ranger. Download

Alignment: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0 -- September 17, 2006: This is Todd Roe's revision of the d20 SRD alignment system, for use with BFRPG. Download

Sorcerers: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0 -- September 16, 2006: Here's Ray Allen's version of the Sorcerer class for BFRPG. Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.3 -- September 16, 2006: Several more areas on the Morgansfort key have been detailed, courtesy of new contributor Mark Goss. Check out the Bank, the Gambling House, the herbalist and the semi-retired magic-user; also the common warehouse is now detailed. Download

The Fine Art of Monster Conversion 2006.2 by Ray Allen -- September 04, 2006: Ray's been busy! Here's the latest revision of his conversion article. Download

The Fine Art of Monster Conversion 2006.1 by Ray Allen -- September 03, 2006: Here as requested are Ray's instructions for converting d20 monsters to BFRPG. Enjoy! Download

Illusionists: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0, and Druids: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0 -- August 31, 2006: As discussed on Dragonsfoot, I've decided to move away from the Basic Fantasy Companion idea and instead release a number of short articles describing specific optional rules. I'm also open to submissions of such works by others; as sufficient material becomes available to make self-publishing cost effective, I'll compile the articles together into one or more issues of the Olde Dungeoneer's Almanack.

At any rate, to start the process rolling, I've decided to release these (very unfinished) articles for the Druid and Illusionist classes. Anyone wishing to submit articles for BFRPG should download at least one of these articles, and use it for a template. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.53 -- August 31, 2006: Dragonsfoot user olaberg pointed out some spell discrepancies, which have been resolved. Another piece of art, a "generic" dwarf by Dan Dalton, graces the character races section. Now we just need to illustrate elves... everyone ought to know by now what a human looks like, right? The missing disease details for rats and giant rats is now included, as well as new rules for Constitution loss and recovery (in the Encounter section). Finally, a new set of rules for magical research, combining material from Luigi Castellani with some of my own ideas and a few bits from the forum thread, has been added (in the Game Master section). Download

Companion Release 2006.0 -- August 07, 2006: This is the first release of the Basic Fantasy Companion, and boy, there's not much here. Hopefully this seed will sprout... Download

New Character Sheets by Ray Allen -- July 31, 2006: Ray "maddog" Allen has provided us with a landscape character sheet, along with Magic-User and Cleric spell sheets. Download

BF2 Fortress, Tomb, and Tower 2006.0 -- July 31, 2006: This is the first release of the combined module, and the first appearance of the new cover art by Steve Zieser. The module includes the last released version of Fortress of the Iron Duke as well as the first ever release of Tomb of Karsma Megalos. Crooked Rock Tower isn't even started yet... just a pile of old paper maps and a hard-to-read (handwritten) key on my floor right now. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.52 -- July 29, 2006: This version includes additional artwork by Luigi Castellani; I'm especially pleased with his rendition of the magic sword known as the Star of Avault (on page 45 in the Encounter rules, above the Combat heading). New instructions for spell acquisition are now included in the Game Master's section. The Sleep spell has been revised due to discussion in the Dragonsfoot forum thread. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.51 -- July 17, 2006: This version has been proofread by Daryl Burns, who pointed out many details that needed clarification. He also supplied descriptive text for the player character races. Changes have been made to the damage figures for the light and heavy crossbow, as a consequence of the discussion of the subject on Dragonsfoot. Luigi Castellani provided rules for wrestling; after some discussion on Dragonsfoot, a revised version of his rules have been included. Luigi also supplied some new artwork (check out the giants). Dan Dalton provided a weapons rack drawing to decorate the Equipment section, as well as a picture of a Halfling; I understand he plans to draw additional character-race pictures for the core rules as well. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.50 -- June 24, 2006: This version has been proofread by Tonya Allen (thanks!) as well as myself, and is much improved in many places. The only substantial change is that Elves now receive a +2 saving throw bonus on Magic Wands as well as Spells; I thought it strange that, in many cases, an Elf might have a better Spells save than his or her Wands save, so I extended the bonus to cover both. Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.2 -- June 21, 2006: Several areas on the Morgansfort key have been detailed, including the gatehouse, the inn, the "Square" and the chapel, with key NPCs added. Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.1 -- June 18, 2006: I've made a pass through the entire document, standardizing the monster layouts mostly; I also noticed a few "Glainisms" that I removed, making the dungeons more generic. The intro to the Cave of the Unknown has been revised to fit the Morgansfort area better. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.49 -- June 16, 2006: Many thanks to Ray Allen for indexing the document; he found and corrected a few errors along the way. This release also includes three new pieces of art from Steve Zieser. Not much else changed, but the index and the art is so cool I had to release a new version right away. Download

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.0 -- June 13, 2006: This is the "initial" release of this module, but of course as it is a combination of the original BF0 Morgansfort, BF1 The Nameless Dungeon and BF2 The Cave of the Unknown, it's really not the first time after all. Very few changes in this edition vs. the original documents... mostly formatting issues, which will be a constant job for some time. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.48 -- June 10, 2006: New artwork by Matt Finch serves to decorate the now-written City, Town and Village Encounters section. I've eliminated the Castle Encounters section... that sort of wandering around an uncharted (by the GM, even!) wilderness doesn't appeal to me, but if someone else wants to write it, I'll put it back in. What that means is... by my measure of the project, it's COMPLETE. Yes, you read that right. I'm changing the "unfinished" list into a "nice to have" list, to show the things omitted that aren't necessary to the project but would be, well, nice to have. If those things never appear, I won't miss them. With proofing, editing, and possibly a little more artwork, this edition could be published! Download

Core Rules Release 2006.47 -- June 03, 2006: Antonio Eleuteri pointed out an error in the saving throw category for the Gold Dragon, which I've corrected; then he took on the job of adding class and level to each and every spell. In the process, he also found errors in two spells, Dispel Magic and Read Languages, which he corrected. Nick Bogan suggested a wording change in the Stronghold rules, which I've implemented. Eldrad mentioned the lack of any text describing the personalities of the various dragon types; I've added such text, and in the process sorted the dragons into alphabetical order. The previous order was rather arbitrary.

There are some layout "anomalies" in this version, but I'm releasing it anyway. I hope to get them straightened out before releasing the next version. Download

New "Standard" Character Sheet Posted -- May 31, 2006: This morning I've posted a first "cut" at a standard character sheet for the game. Download

Steve Zieser's Character Sheet Posted -- May 30, 2006: Steve "Carjack" Zieser has submitted a PDF version of the character sheet he used at the CRGCon (see the May 27, 2006 item below), and it is now available from the website. Thanks, Steve! Download

Core Rules Release 2006.46 -- May 29, 2006: Nick comes through again with complete wilderness encounter tables, removing one more item from the "unfinished" list; he's also added a bit to the Fighter class description. Playtesting revealed some deficiencies in the Turning Undead rules, which I have hopefully corrected, and Jason Schmidt pointed out a misprint in the description of the spell Quest, which I have also corrected. I also discovered deficiencies in the description of the Web spell, and after some consideration I've made a few minor changes therein. This edition contains more new artwork courtesy of Steve Zieser, depicting a Kobold, an Orc and a Goblin; take a look at them in the Monsters section. Lastly, the Giant Tarantula was missing a substantial part of its description, and that has been corrected. Download

CRGCon Spring 2006 Mini-Con -- May 27, 2006: This was the first game convention of any sort I had attended in more than 15 years, but it was the best I've ever attended. Despite my status as a "gatecrasher" (from another state, mind you), I was made very welcome indeed. I ran BFRPG with a version of Eric Holmes "Tower of Zenopus" for the morning session, and was able to play in Steve Zieser's BFRPG "Crypt of Doom" game in the afternoon. A good time was had by all, and furthermore I found (or had pointed out to me) several rules errors and deficiencies which I am correcting for release in version 2006.46 of the core rules document.

I hope to be able to attend this event again next year. For those in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area who might be interested in this event or other events by these fellows, here's the link to their Yahoo! group page:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/CRGCon

Thanks again to Steve Zieser and Doug Wilson for making me welcome at their mini-con, and to all the guys who played in the events listed above for making the games fun. You'll all be listed as playtesters starting with 2006.46... if you don't see your name on the title page, email me.

Core Rules Release 2006.45 -- May 24, 2006: Nick Bogan has provided much-needed additional detail in the "Designing a Wilderness Adventure" section of the rules. Brawling rules have been added, and some more new Steve Zieser artwork is in there. The maneuverability class and attack bonus information previously missing from the Monsters section has been filled in. There is very little remaining to be finished... Download

Core Rules Release 2006.44 -- May 20, 2006: So now I've rearranged again. Tactical Movement no longer has its own "section;" I've rolled those rules into the regular Encounter rules. The Giant Barracuda has been added to the Monsters section, courtesy of new contributor Emiliano Maretti. Specialists and mercenaries are now detailed. Vehicles have been moved just after Equipment, along with Siege Engines; I've simplified the siege engine details in this version. Some vehicle information is not yet filled in, but it's really close now. Also, new artwork has been added courtesy of Steve Zieser, depicting all four of the "iconic" characters from the intro story. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.43 -- May 09, 2006: I've rearranged the Vehicles, moving them to the Equipment section; many details for several types of ship are not given yet, as I'm working them out right now (and some details that are written down may change). I've also added eight spells: Blade Barrier, Cure Critical Wounds, Feeblemind, Heal, Reincarnate, Telekinesis, True Seeing, and Wall of Iron. Missing descriptive text has been added to the Green Slime. Some work has been done to the vehicles (particularly waterborne vehicles). Download

Core Rules Release 2006.42 -- May 07, 2006: Morale and Reactions are now explained in the Encounter section. The NPC party rules are now complete, but need to be extensively reviewed. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.41 -- May 02, 2006: I've corrected the treasure types for the humanoids; turns out only the Hobgoblin and Urgoblin entries were messed up. The Narwhal is now complete, and missing descriptive text has been added to the Elementals. I've dropped the Giant Rockfish... I'm not even sure which of several "rockfish" it's supposed to be. Both types of Salamander are now described, as are the Bull Shark, Great White Shark, Mako Shark, Giant Rattlesnake, Pit Viper, Spitting Cobra, Sea Snake, Giant Black Widow Spider, Giant Crab Spider, Giant Tarantula, Pterodactyl, Pteranodon, Giant Rhagodessa, Giant Shrew, Giant Tuatara and Giant Horned Chameleon. In other words... ALL the monsters are done! Download

Core Rules Release 2006.40 -- April 30, 2006: Filled in the descriptive text for the Giant Crab, Giant Bass, Giant Piranha and Giant Leech (hmm, a pattern) as well as Living Statues, Rock Baboons and Sea Serpents. I've dropped the Giant Sturgeon after a brief "discussion" on Dragonsfoot. All references to "hull points" have been removed, in preparation for the revised structure damage rules (already partially implemented in the Stronghold rules). The wilderness adventure guidelines are now complete; I can't help but think this section could use some extra help, but nothing comes to mind just now, so I'm calling it done. Last, but far from least, a version of the Tactical Movement rules Nick Bogan proposed are integrated into the rules. These rules are largely irrelevant in ordinary dungeon adventures, but are handy as heck in tactical situations in the wilderness. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.39 -- April 23, 2006: Fixed an error in the Web spell (no area of effect). Finished the Retainers section, and added a substantial amount to the Specialists and Mercenaries sections. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.38 -- April 12, 2006: One thing that was missing but not noted anywhere was information about "normal men," that is, zero level or non-classed characters. I've corrected this omission. I have also included a new table for monster attack bonuses; the previous AB equals Hit Dice progression was just too much compared to the player character attack bonus table. Some related introductory text for the Monsters section has also been corrected. Per previous notes on the Dragonsfoot thread, I've replaced the Giant Oil Beetle with a very similar Giant Bombardier Beetle. The Giant Tiger Beetle and Giant Cave Locust are also completed. Additional descriptive material has been added to the Giant Centipede, finishing that entry (I've also updated their movement, as I believe that these "fast moving" creatures should move at least as fast as an unarmored man). Download

Core Rules Release 2006.37 -- April 10, 2006: I've reformatted the encounter tables; I'm not certain I like them yet, but they do fit better now. The "Becoming Lost" subheading is now filled in. I've detailed Bandits and Buccaneers, and removed Berserkers (not sure what they're good for; if you miss them, send me text and I'll put them back in). Download

Core Rules Release 2006.36 -- April 08, 2006: More work has been completed on the Wilderness Random Encounters, and the introductory text for the Treasure section is complete (though I'm not entirely happy with it, I believe it's adequate). I've also filled in the description for the Roc, Killer Whale and Giant Weasel. After some research, I've combined the Giant Ferret and Giant Weasel entries... the two creatures are too similar, being of the same family, and in my judgement both are not needed. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.35 -- April 05, 2006: I've added a monster: the Alicorn (see the entry for Unicorn for details). Information about NPC Adventurer parties has been added, and work has been done on the Wilderness Random Encounters, both with regard to rules as well as the tables themselves. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.34 -- March 28, 2006: I've finally filled in the Judging Wishes section, and I believe the formatting of the Game Master section from that point on is now stable. The Explanation of Equipment section is complete as far as I'm concerned. Also, the Charging rule has been missing for some time, but has now been added to the Encounter section. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.33 -- March 25, 2006: A Rate of Fire subsection has been added, mainly to clarify the use of crossbows. Additional equipment descriptions, including the Tinderbox, flint and steel (courtesy of Stuart Marshall, who I've added to the Contributors list), have been added. Also, rules for repeated Turn Undead attempts have been added. Lastly, I filled in one more subheading in the Creating a Wilderness Adventure section in the back. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.32 -- March 23, 2006: Text has been added for the Giant Frog/Giant Toad, Insect Swarms, the Cyclops and the Giant Fly. Candles are on the equipment list, along with the missing weight for the 10' pole (10 pounds) and descriptive text for the lighting items in the Explanation of Equipment section. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.31 -- March 22, 2006: I've completed the descriptive text for the Mastodon and Mountain Lion; I set out to fill in the Panther, but after some research I discovered that Panther is a pretty broad descriptive term. Mountain Lions, it turns out, technically are Panthers, as are leopards and all sorts of great cats. I didn't know how many there were... but after some further research I chose to replace the Panther entry with Jaguar, as they are a distinct type of great cat with unique behaviors. Anyway... I moved the Pony information into the Beasts of Burden entry (an oversight from earlier) and added candles to the Adventure/Light section. Now I need to put them on the equipment list... Download

Core Rules Release 2006.30 -- March 19, 2006: Additional monster descriptions have been added, including the Troglodyte and Bugbear by Evan Moore as well as my own adaptation of the Yellow Mold, Green Slime, all the Giants except the Cyclops, and the Gnomes. Also added is text in the Adventure section under the Traps and Random Encounters headings. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.29 -- March 18, 2006: Another Strongholds update by Nick Bogan, a re-arrangement of the GM's section, and a couple of new monsters (the Blood Rose and the Hangman Tree) are the main additions in this update. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.28 -- February 26, 2006: This release includes updated Stronghold rules, Evasion and Pursuit rules (filled in at last), capacities for backpacks and sacks (in the Explanation of Equipment section), and two additional Clerical spells: Regenerate and Restoration. Well, actually, the description for Regenerate is absent, but Restoration is filled in. Elsewhere in the rules I state that negative levels can be restored "by magic" but no such magic was actually in there; Regenerate is included to fill the 6th level spell list out to an even die size. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.27 -- February 21, 2006: This release contains Stronghold rules by Nick Bogan; that's the only significant change in this version, but I wanted to make sure Nick and I were on the same page. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.26 -- February 16, 2006: Okay, now the dungeon creation guidelines are done. They take up just two pages including a small dungeon map illustration... I'm real happy with it. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.25 -- February 16, 2006: Call this release the "Magic-Items-Are-All-Done!" release. I dropped one more item along the way: the Wand of Metal Detection. It's not one I've ever used, and it's way different from anything in the spell rules. I kept the other detection wands, though I had to write a few from scratch. Also a little of the text for the dungeon stocking section is in there; I hope to get that part done next. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.24 -- February 14, 2006: This release adds more magic item descriptions (the staves are done!) but drops the Staff of Withering; it appears it does not exist in the SRD, and I've never used it enough to go to the trouble of reinventing it. Wilderness movement rates are now given, as well as preliminary rules for traveling by land, sea and air. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.23 -- February 12, 2006: This version adds two monsters I need for a module: the Blood Rose and the Hangman Tree. Also, I've added many more magic item descriptions, as well as correcting an error on the Miscellaneous Magic table. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.22 -- February 09, 2006: This version contains the last three missing spells, courtesy of William Smith, who also submitted text for the Oil and Holy Water parts of the Encounter section. This forced me to nail down rules for Grenade-Like Missiles. Also, this version contains descriptive text for the Tentacle Worm. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.21 -- February 08, 2006: This release adds three more spells from William Smith: Invisible Stalker, Projected Image, and Snake Charm; the only other change is a rewrite of the Movement rate rules. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.20 -- February 05, 2006: Many more magic items added with this version, as well as dungeon wandering monster tables and the "bones" of the wilderness tables. I've also added a bit to the intro story (in the Wandering Monsters subsection). Finally, this version contains my first cut at changing movement over to a more d20-natural single figure; the movement rules haven't been revised yet, but all the movement stats should have been fixed in this version. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.19 -- February 04, 2006: Several new spells from William Smith have been added: Find Traps, Growth of Plants, Protection From Normal Missiles, Speak With Animals, Speak With Monsters, Speak With Plants, Striking, and Ventriloquism. In addition, I've added about a page of material to the magic item section, including descriptions of about half of the potions as well as notes about magic items in general. I realize this release is REAL soon after the previous one, but with so much added I just had to get it posted! Download

Core Rules Release 2006.18 -- February 04, 2006: All the monsters have stats! The Unicorn and Vampire entries are done, as far as I'm concerned, and a good start has been made on several more of those unfinished to this point. I've eliminated the Thoul (as I'm uncertain of its copyright status), and included the "replacement" monster: the Urgoblin. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.17 -- February 02, 2006: The main addition for this version is three new spells from William Smith: Conjure Elemental, Floating Disc and Spiritual Hammer. Also many more monster stats (some even with additional descriptive text) are now included, and the document is still under 100 pages! Download

Core Rules Release 2006.16 -- January 31, 2006: The main thing changed in this version is the layout... I've gone with mirrored margins, as suggested by Stuart Marshall, so as to make the whole thing print out a lot nicer. An added bonus is that the document is now under 100 pages again! Several errors noticed by William Smith have been corrected also.

I've cleaned up and simplified the treasure generation tables and added an optional rule for Magic-Users preparing spells from memory (short answer: don't do it if you don't have to!). Content-wise, that's about all that's added. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.15 -- January 29, 2006: Okay, now I have statistics for the monsters up through the Gorgon. I was surprised to find out how much the SRD "nerfed" the Dragon Turtle compared to older versions; I've restored the biggest draconian to something resembling its former glory. I spent some time working on descriptive text for the golems, also; I've included some golem types that come from the SRD as well as my own personal versions of the Amber, Bronze, Wood, and Bone Golems. They vary somewhat from their original versions, as I felt I should integrate the two different "visions" of golems. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.14 -- January 28, 2006: I've added statistics for the monsters up to and including the dragons. I've also added a lot of text in the dragon section; I think they are pretty well complete. I made some textual corrections (particularly in the Open Game License section) and added more of the introductory story (in the Treasure section). Download

Core Rules Release 2006.13 -- January 26, 2006: Numerous additions. Most of the spells are there now; only those not represented in Ray Allen's document, and not already rewritten by myself, are missing. Rules for spell preparation are in there now, but I'm not entirely happy with them... I'm sure they could be more brief and/or clear (I'll take clarity over brevity, but I like both).

The document is currently 98 pages long, including the cover. I have high hopes that I'll be able to keep it down to no more than 129 (128 plus cover). Download

Core Rules Release 2006.12 -- January 23, 2006: Many little changes... some table reformatting, rules for Turning Undead, some explanatory text in the Monsters section as well as stats for all the A and B monsters; they're effectively done. Also a few more spells from maddog's spellbook. Just a lot of stuff.

I printed a few pages (the early pages that look pretty well done to me) and I'm not happy with how that font looks in print; it aligns badly vertically on the printer. I'm not sure if Souvenir would be better, as I haven't tried it yet... I really need Souvenir Demi before I can do that (I have Souvenir Light, Souvenir Light Italic and Souvenir Demi Italic but not the upright Souvenir Demi). Download

Core Rules Release 2006.11 -- January 22, 2006: Additional "introductory" text as well as more rules in the Encounter section; this includes Surprise rules and the Clerics vs. Undead table. I chose to put it into the Encounter rather than Character section as it seems more appropriate, and less confusing to a newbie generating his or her first character. Also added the missing Sneak Attack rule for Thieves. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.10 -- January 21, 2006: Several spells added courtesy of Ray Allen, and many more of those to come. I've also added some additional introductory text, which my daughter has announced is "Cool!" She followed up by saying, "You wrote that?" Thanks, sweetie. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.9 -- January 20, 2006: I've added a little bit to the introduction, and mined substantial text from my Project 74 rules, particularly the Encumbrance section. I've had to rewrite quite a bit that came from Project 74; I wrote those rules for expert RPG players, but Basic Fantasy is, well, basic.

Frankly I'm beginning to see Project 74 mutating into a few pages of add-on rules for Basic Fantasy...

This will be the first public release. I'm adding Basic Fantasy to the directory on my home page, and announcing it on Dragonsfoot. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.8 -- January 01, 2006: Not much new in this one, but I've finally written an introduction. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.7 -- January 01, 2006: Still more monster descriptive text copied. In some cases there isn't enough actual description; I'm going to have to go back over the text and embellish it, probably when I add the missing statistics. I'm through the "S" monsters at this point. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.6 -- January 01, 2006: Many more monsters descriptions copied, plus some minor text edits. Also added a rule for ability rolls that get easier as the character gains levels. I'm going to use that later...

Check out the Mermaid entry... I'm rather proud of it. Download

Core Rules Release 2006.5 -- January 01, 2006: It turns out that the 3.5 SRD is a much richer source of monster descriptive text, even though much must be ignored. I have filled in descriptive text for many monsters, though some is still incomplete; the material in the Dragon section is from my own campaign materials, and not from the SRD at all.

I've also completed the thief ability table, and added the optional thief customization rule (in the GM section). Download

Core Rules Release 2006.4 -- January 01, 2006: I've completed my "mining" of the C&C Monsters PDF, and frankly I didn't get much. Roughly half of the monsters in the document aren't in the list I'm trying to fill, and of the ones that are, a lot of work was needed to match them to the rules and to my conception of those monsters. That's not a slam on the Troll Lords... they just aren't playing the same game I am.

I have inserted empty statblocks for all the monsters. I've also written the basic character generation rules and the optional rules section (except for alternative thief abilities since I haven't yet written the thief ability table). Download
