New User Introductions

Post by Solomoriah »

New users, please make a post here telling us how you got involved with Basic Fantasy RPG. Due to a high incidence of spambots, we've decided to use this thread to vet new users; if you don't make a post here, we'll have to disapprove all your posts until you do. I'm sorry it's come to this, but we've actually seen spambots having conversations, or trying to, there are so many now, and the AI is getting pretty good at faking being human in short posts.

I think I already posted some of this on another thread but I'll post it here as well.
I started off with playing basic d&d when I was at school then gravitated onto AD&D - most of us did at that time - both playing and DM'ing for some years. Then they brought out 2nd edition and I really tried to get into it but the system had lost a lot of the fun element by that time - different rules to cover every possible eventuality - and I stopped playing, getting into WFRP, RQ/RQII/Legend and others instead.
Fast forward a few years and, just by chance, I saw a couple of ebay listings for (overpriced) Basic Fantasy rpg, googled it and bought some of the books - it's a great system; clean, simple and, above all else, fun! I'll be playing and (possibly) running this as my default system I think, especially when you consider how easy it is to convert the basic and expert modules over.

Anyone looking for an example of what to post, read Dickon66's post above. It doesn't have to be that long or detailed, but it needs the kind of concrete details that mark it as being from a real human.

I got started with playing rpgs in the early 90s when my older brother was forced to let me tag along to his star wars group. I think I was 8 or 9 at the time and I got to play an ewok. I didn't get into DnD until the 3rd edition when I was at high-school. I heard about basic fantasy somewhere on reddit as an alternative to dungeon crawl classics and other osr books. I haven't ran any basic fantasy yet, I'm currently running 5e and castle and crusades right now.

Hi Basic Fantasy creators and players! I'm very new to RPGs and kind of cursing myself for not finding the hobby sooner. Middle-aged nostalgia led me back to some 'choose your own adventure' style books, which are great, but I wanted more freedom. I found some modern systems to be a little too prescriptive for the kinds of characters I envisioned playing, which has been entirely solo so far, yet Basic Fantasy gives me just enough sparks and a clean ruleset to get me going. I'm hoping to get a physical copy of the 4th edition soon. Both covers have my vote for awesomeness!

Thanks for having me!

Hello all.
Just joined. Our game group switches it up from game to game and right now the DM wants to play basic.
We're having fun. The main reason I joined is because I keep seeing that elves retain the ability to cast spells in armor, but only in forums and a single sentence in the monsters as player characters supplement. I can't find it in any book. Am I just missing it? Or am I looking in the wrong books? Is it not a rule anymore?

Elf Fighter/Magic-Users can cast spells while wearing armor, per Combination Classes, page 6 of the 4thEd Core Rules. Single-classed Elf Magic-Users cannot.

Hey guys,

I'm just getting into the OSR, and I figured I'd join here since I'm running this game. I've been playing TTRPGs for a few years now, and decided to change pace after the VTM campaign I was DMing fell through. I'm not likely to do much more than lurk, but I figured I'd like to have this open as a resource should I need it.

Cheers!

Vampire: The Masquerade, sorry. It's a RPG with a modern setting where you play as Vampires in a political drama, essentially. Turns out it's not a style of play I'm very good at, so we changed systems.

I know the game, just don't recognize it by an abbreviation. Thanks!

Hello there, everyone. In an attempt to prove I'm no cyber man addicted to meat byproduct, I'll introduce myself. My name's Jake, (or Animite if you prefer) and when it comes to the wonderful world of TTRPGs, I've read and played quite a few different systems over the decades. Here they are in no particular order:

--Dungeons & Dragons (Editions 1-3 and 5, the gateway drug of all things pen and paper RPG)
--GURPS
--GURPS Traveller
--Classic Traveller
--Champions 4th and 5th Edition
--Robotech: The RPG
--Star Wars (d6 and Edge of Empire)
--Starfleet Battles
--DCC RPG
--Mork Borg
--Mouseguard
--Synnibar

That's all I can think of now. There may be more but my brain has decided that's the end of the list.

So, what brought me around to BFRPG? As of late, I've been getting into the solo role-playing scene, and some commenters on YouTube gave me the idea of checking out this system. At present, I've read through the 4th edition book and some of the supplements, and I must say that I'm very impressed with the system and its rules-lite approach. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of some friends from one of my old groups who wanted to do something similar; that is, take old school D&D and tweak the rules to make it easier to create characters and start playing. They didn't finish their project to my knowledge, but I'm glad someone else in this grand universe of ours had a similar idea and did something with it.

My future plans for this system are to either play by myself or in a co-op game. Heck, the generation system is so intuitive, I might see if I can coax my nephew and niece into playing it. And I'll probably be purchasing the core rulebook in the not too distant future, either.
