Need a little Help

Post Fri Apr 20, 2012 12:38 pm

Hey guys sorry about creating so many threads so quickly but I need a little help with something. I frequent another forum a lot and recently I was sharing my love of BFRPG and another forum goer and I started talking about playing each others favorite respective games. Well he agreed to give BFRPG a shot and that sort of put me a position to run a BFRPG PBP over on that forum. Now seeing as the forum is for the Goblins comic; http://www.goblinscomic.com/06252005/ I figured I would do something goblins related and this reminded me of an idea I had some time ago while playing dwarf fortress. The idea was that the players as a group would run a dwarf fortress, playing the parts of the most important dwarves, and their would be a sort of macro/micro action going on. The macro part of the action would be to as a group make decisions regarding building, diplomacy, warfare and so on. While the micro part of the action would be using the BFRPG rules during stuff like dungeon crawls, skirmishes, group exploration and the like. Now I applied this idea to Goblins and came up with a game idea. It would essentially be about a group of goblins establishing a new camp along the borderlands of the civilized realms (their is some story to go along with it, pertaining to why they would want to establish such a camp in a dangerous are and so on). SO in a way its a reversed keep on the borderlands, instead of being brave adventurers delving into the wilds, the group would start in the wilds, explore the wilds and deal with bands of other monsters, natural dangers and of course bands of gold and glory seeking adventurers before striking out against the human settlement in the area. So I have the idea right? But I feel as though I am missing a few things that I just can't quite put my finger on. I have the rules for creating characters, I pretty much have the main antagonist settlement set up, I lack a sandbox map (which I always have problems making). Do you guys see anything else I might be missing?

Sorry, I don't have anything to add right now, but I just had to say I think this is a really cool idea. Good luck with it!
The problem with doing something really stupid to impress people is that they may just be impressed by how stupid you really are.

Thanks! I got over the biggest hurdle which is making the regional map (I copied an old Mystara map) now all I need is to make a few random encounter charts, write up a few different tribes of monsters, stat up the human settlement and any institutions attached to it (I got a great one called The Vanguard in mind), and come up with rumors and then maybe I will be halfway done.

As a little bonus for anyone who is reading this here are the stats for the goblin player race I am using.

Goblins
Description: Goblins are small, quick-witted humanoids that favor ambushes, cunning traps, dirty tricks, and any other edge they can devise. An adult Goblin stands 3½ to 4 feet tall and weigh 45 to 50 pounds. Their eyes usually bright and crafty looking, varying in color from red through yellow. A goblins skin tone ranges from green to yellow through any shade of orange to a deep red; usually all members of a single tribe are about the same color. Goblins typically wear clothing of leather, favoring darker colors for better camouflage.

Restrictions: Goblins may become Clerics, Fighters and Thieves. They are required to have a minimum Dexterity of 9. Due to their small stature, they may not have a Strength higher than 17. Goblins may not use Large weapons, and must wield Medium weapons with both hands. Goblins never roll higher than six-sided dice (d6) for hit points.

Special Abilities: All Goblins have Darkvision 60' range. When attacked in melee by creatures larger than man-sized, Goblins gain a +2 bonus to their Armor Class. When outdoors in forested terrain a Goblin can hide very effectively; so long as they remain still they have a 70% chance to remain undetected. Even when in non-preferred terrain they are able to hide with a 50% chance to remain undetected. Note that a Goblin Thief will roll for hiding attempts only once, using either the Thief ability or the Goblin ability, whichever is better.

Saving Throws: Goblins save at +2 vs. Death Ray or Poison, and at +3 vs. Dragon Breath.

Any suggestions regarding the game would be greatly appreciated.

For anyone interested here is the map I so shamelessly copied (for the most part). Please note it does not have any settlements or ruins or anything like that placed on it.

Feel free to use it if you want. I will probably post a version of it with settlements on it...eventually. :)

Long ago, my brother, a couple friends, and I (with me being DM) played B2 KotB similar to how you describe. They were not goblins or whatever, but they were a party of neutrals and evils. We were playing a bit of hybrid AD&D/Basic, so we had such alignments.

The evil party commandeered the Orcs (being led by my brother who was using a 1/2 Orc character at the time) then went on to control the majority of the caves. One very fun part was when I had a really formidable good party (Paladin, Magic-User, Cleric, complete with mounts, men-at-arms and such) assault the caves, with the evil party having to rally the monsters to fight them off. It was a blast.

Your idea will probably be a lot of fun as a very different sort of game for your players.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Y'know, if you're playing over there, you should let goblins play fighter/thief/clerics/ whatever other classes you use.

You should know why.

I've been entertaining the idea of doing a somewhat inverted game, but I'd need to free up time to work on it.

I know Joe, and I am ashamed. :(

I only presented the Goblins with class restrictions because that's how the rest of BF is presented. I will most likely let players play whatever class they want (maybe), but their I am only using the four core classes to keep things simple (for now).

I have had the idea for this reverse setting for a long long time. One of my old D&D buddies and myself you too spend hours chatting about the idea, of course then we were thinking of playing high level villains deep inside a dungeon with minions fighting off bands of heroes hell bent on our destruction and looting our bank accounts (fat bank accounts I might add).

I tend to think a bit smaller.

Let's say Dragon #141 had a bit impact on my college years.
