Unarmored fighters

Post Wed Mar 14, 2012 9:49 pm

I'm writing the Gaucho Fighter Sub-Class, and found an inconvenient: How do we deal with fighters with limited access to armor?
I have several ideas but I can't decide for anyone...
Any suggestion will be gladly received.

Some versions of the Barbarian class, and Adepts of the Way (aka Monks) receive an AC bonus as they go up in level. Something like that may be appropriate. This doesn't have to be a constant advantage - you can have it only apply in certain situations. Having it when they would receive a Dex bonus for AC (not surprised or "flat-footed") is most common, but you could also have it only apply to melee combat, or only while mounted, or only with certain weapons in hand (I think the Duelist had that sort of "flashing blade" advantage).

Sounds like the gaucho should be somebody who depends on his speed to get him out of trouble (AKA Dex bonus to AC)

After some thoughts I'm inclined to using an alternate idea: giving the Gaucho ability to recover faster from some damage as they don't really have any special defense but they have a toughened body.
I'm having some problems using the LibreOffice, once i bypass that I'll upload it.

would a con bonus work better than healing faster since you would want them to be tougher in a fight, not just ready to get back into another fight sooner?

The Barbaric quasi-class uses a Toughness quality, a sort of damage reduction and save bonus combined... take a look at that to see if it might serve a similar function for your class.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

I like the idea of the Con bonus for the Barbarian class (I'll make one sooner or later), the thing with using Attribute Bonus is that not every character will receive the benefit. I'm thinking on giving both the better natural healing (a damage conversion probability) and a natural armor of "tough skin" or something similar...
