creature conversion question

Post Sat Feb 20, 2021 7:31 pm

Hey!

I am sorry if this has been asked or if this is a topic I shouldn't be asking. I will make any changes needed as a moderator directs.

My question is if there is a conversion or how would I convert kuo-toa and Bullywugs into Basic Fantasy. I know I read somewhere that we really only have to fix AC if it was from the THACO days. I just really don't know what I have to do?
I am hoping that I will be able to take any response and use them to convert old modules from my childhood. I am looking at you Slave Pits of the Undercity...lol

Thanks for any help!

Check the Field Guide for the Wugs.
Check the 3 Field Guides for the other one, I don't know if a submitted monsters its a conversion of that one...
If not 20-AC gives you the ascending AC I think, other special abilities should be converted in a more artistic rather than formulaic way as some monsters may be more powerful depending on their edition they are taken from.
Sorry for any misspelling or writing error, I am not a native English speaker

If you're using TSR-era modules, the power levels of the monsters should be about right, and they should actually be printed in the module in most cases without needing a monster book. Just subtract the AC in the monster's stat block from 19 if the module is for OD&D or Basic, or 20 if it's for AD&D. If the module refers you to a book, you can check one of the Field Guides, and if they're not there, look around at other free retro-clones. I believe you could simply substitute something like OSE's Merman for the Kuo-Toa. (OSE and Swords & Wizardry have system reference documents online. S&W in particular has an extensive free bestiary on theirs which you can take monsters from and plunk into BFRPG without major issues.)

Tazer, I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. Always subtract AC from 20. If the game is 1E and the AC is 10, it becomes 11.

The armor class values of leather, chainmail, and platemail are 7, 5, and 3 in both of the classic games. They need to become 13, 15, and 17 in Basic Fantasy. This relationship is MORE important than the 1E-era shift of unarmored characters from 9 to 10, since comparing monsters between the two classic editions shows that their AC values did not (for the most part) change.
