BF Reference Book for the Table: Spells & Magic

Post Wed Aug 05, 2020 1:16 am

My favored OSR system is Basic Fantasy, but I've always liked the physical format of the Old School Essentials books, so I've started to design my own little books designed to be used as rules references at the table. Any feedback would be welcomed.

I've started with a reference book for spells & magic. It basically has all of the basic rules for magic users & clerics. Following the OSE example, I've tried to design it to minimize page flipping. No spell appears on more than one page.
  • 6" x 9" format
  • Basic rules for spell casting, turning undead, & animal affinity
  • Includes Druids & Illusionists
  • Lists all spell information in alphabetical order
I think I have the basic format I want, but I'll probably add the following:
  • Updated info - I'm still using some of the older versions of the supplements
  • I'll probably include some art.
  • A nicer cover

Be aware I am trying to give the Illusionists more toys to play with! (No new rules. Just more spells.) Hopefully, the update can rise to the level to be checked out soon.

Nice cover!

ng76, who is the cover artist? We can't share it if we don't have rights to it.

Also wish you didn't use the crenelated cover frame. I reserve that for official publications; if your book becomes official, then I would create the appropriate cover. I can't tell you "no" but I can ask you not to share it.

The file does not have any cover, so it should be ok to share but the bottom part of the licence is incomplete, and I think it should include the credits of the creators of the used supplements

The artist is Virginia Frances Sterrett, from the Project Gutenberg edition of Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne

I'll keep the cover separate.

Good point on the license. I'll start updating that.

I like the idea of a OSE-esque reference material for BFRPG. Although, I was expecting the spells to be summarised in bullet point form. Not sure what's ok to do and not to do.

What's been a revelation to me though was the availability of public domain images via Project Gutenberg. Didn't realise this.

All Basic Fantasy RPG rules are Open Game Content. You can summarize them however you want.
