Things I hate about Facebook

Post Thu May 21, 2020 4:36 pm

... that I don't want to air on Facebook.

Over the previous two weeks I had, I don't know, five or so invitations from the same guy for his group. I declined each, but I started to get tired of it, so I sent him a message and asked him (nicely, I thought) to please stop inviting me.

Well, he blocked me. Not enough to just unfriend me, apparently.

Today, after about four requests over the last few days (one per day), I asked another guy the same thing. This time I said:
I keep getting invitations from you to join your group. I just don't have time for any more groups. Please stop inviting me.
And he blocked me, too, after sending a nastygram I won't repeat here.

Seriously, people, the best way to grow a Facebook group is organically. Inviting all your friends repeatedly is just going to make some of them irritated; possibly the others simply quietly unfriended the person doing this, rather than asking them not to do it, but I don't see at all what's wrong with asking.

Am I off base here?

Nope, I think you're in the right. To me it just shows the other guys immaturity.

I appreciate that facebook reaches a number of people that we wouldn't normally intersect with, but otherwise I am getting to the point of frustration with Facebook in general. It just doesn't seem to be my thing.

I think all our conversations on facebook ought to point to "for real discourse about BFRPG with designers/collaborators/real-users, join us in the BFRPG forums."

I try over and over to try to be engaged with posts and whatnot there, but I quickly lose track of where the conversations go as they get posts and replies and so on. Just isn't my thing to watch these conversations.

I feel your frustrations w/ Facebook
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Ha. Looking for players for my online playtest, I've had to resort to Facebook, and I've had two (or was it three?) guys so far tell me the forum is hard to navigate.

My wife says it isn't, but she's pretty sharp (though not really technical). I dunno.

I think the forum is TOO organized for some people..I mean I don't see how this is so hard to use??

I'm like Smoot. Using FB for any kinda organized subject is impossible, it randomly picks some posts over others etc etc.

Setting down my soapbox and standing on top of it.

My biggest disagreement with the Facebook group page is that some of the people don't see it as Basic Fantasy, but another group for various versions of another game that will remain unnamed or other games that are not part of the Basic Fantasy portfolio.

Just my two cp. Stepping down, picking up my soapbox and taking it with me so no one trips and falls over it. Thank you.

I prefer forums over FB (or reddit, or MeWe, etc) because of the organization.
FB is random in many crazy ways. I'm not on it too much, but about a month ago I had a bad interaction with a big time AD&D FB poster (who'd I previously had positive interactions with) and it actually unsettled me - hateful name calling - it was shocking to me because of how wrong it was, and how he didn't want to explain or talk about it. That's when I realized I have too many friends and groups on FB, for the small amount of time I spend there. As I go through alerts now, I just unfollow the way-too-many groups - it's not worth the grief. So yeah, totally agree.
I enjoy BFRPG dungeons. And played Will Thornton in Dirigible of Doom!

I've personally grown to disdain social media, even the "alternatives" to Facebook and G+ that people were hyped about around a year ago. I much prefer the setup and organization of forums, and this one is organized and moderated better than most. This style of communication may not be trendy or popular any more, but it's classic and it gets the job done.

I call them out when I see them, and I delete posts outright if they are far off topic.

As a newbie here, I will say that the forums are super easy to navigate.

If they can't find a pinned post in the general discussion section, I don't know what to say.
