Out of Character Chat
Re: Out of Character Chat
btw, anyone want to hazard a guess on what this is now that its in plain view and well lit?
Re: Out of Character Chat
Probably just a rabid skeleton, with 4 hp, but enough to put the heebie jeebies into us I'm afraid.
I am not even going to go into how really dangerous this is, I mean a 5 gal keg of oil, burning in a 10' wide corridor, with no breeze to move the smoke. And add to that the fact that unless there is another opening on the other side of Mr. Bone's door, we are in the only path of the smoke and flame as it is drawn to either the cave exit, or the inn entrance. I venture that in reality (such a dirty word) we have approximately 30 seconds of breathable air before we succumb to smoke inhalation.
Now don't let that stop you from throwing that other barrel of oil on that baby, since it beats carrying it all the way back up those stairs to the inn.

Re: Out of Character Chat
my plan was to run within 2 or 3 rounds anyway, so thats less than 30 seconds
Re: Out of Character Chat
So then if we assume 1d6 per rnd for the initial oil fire, and then perhaps an additional 1d6 for the next barrel (plus whatever the DM figures for crawling through it, prob 1d3 per rnd) we are doing very little damage to the thing. Now if it is just a decorative over dressed skeleton then it may be enough, but if it is...say a ghoul that has just let itself go and not eaten in a long while we could be here a bit.
I could walk up to it with my ring of fire resistance and bash the thing over the head with my mace. But that would require two things, a ring of fire resistance and bravery, both of which Brother Arven is in very short supply.

Re: Out of Character Chat
Throwing an oil flask is 1d8 damage for two rounds. I would hope that a raging hall of fire would do multiples of that damage, at least each round would add an additional 1d8. so the first round maybe 1d8 (or more since its more flames than just one flask). second round in the same flame should be the second round of the first damage and the first round of additional damage. so that would be 2d8 (at least, maybe 2d10 or more). 3rd round if still in the flames should be another 2d8 or 2d10 or however much Solomoriah thinks raging torrents of flame should be. Then hopefully if we hit it with oil flasks that should be more damage.
But that all depends on how Solomoriah thinks 50+ feet of flaming oil will do. heck, maybe the ceiling will fall on it.

Re: Out of Character Chat
This is where all good plans unravel with contact with the enemy. I wanted to start outside's its movement range, and then back up our full move every round and toss oil pots at it until it won initiative. But since Grumm stood his ground with the glaive, shybolt will stay by his side.
Re: Out of Character Chat
I had always wondered about the name of our illustrious leader Solomoriah, and finally I was perusing my older than dirt collection of Dragons and it was revealed.
I knew I had seen the name somewhere but assumed that it was on page 4978 of the 3rd vol of the 2nd book "Bacteria of Middle Earth" by the Tolkien Estate or something like that.
Carry on my wayward son.

Re: Out of Character Chat
I had completely forgotten the shadowcat when I chose the name Solomoriah for a 2E human fighter/necromancer. I've used it ever since as my handle.

I have used Nekron99 as my alter ego since first seeing Wizards way back in my childhood
.
I thought that guy was pretty cool. And since it is a pretty genre generic name I can use it for my space gamer forums or whatever.
