Hi Everyone
I've been building my own 2D RPG (PC and Console) in my spare time. Its coming to the point where I now need to start thinking about the actual system I'll use for progression, balancing, etc. Some research brought me here, and I'm considering using the Basic Fantasy RPG as a guideline in my system design.
Game Details (obviously high level)
- 2D Fantasy RPG
- Mid 80's style systems/gameplay
- High Fantasy (Elves, Orcs, etc)
- Turn based JRPG style combat
- Overworld tile based movement, Zoomed in movement (towns/POI/dunegons and proceduraly generated maps for non-unique overworld tiles (ie explore the entire world))
- Obviously alot of DnD influence, but I really don't want to get bogged down with a complicated system.
Since I'm coding it on my own, I'm obviously quite flexible on how I implement things.
What do you think about using the Basic Fantasy RPG system for this? I know you cant tell me it will work, but hopinh sure you can point out portions of it that may work well, and things that won't.
Mostly what I'm looking for is
- Character creation, stats, skills, etc
- Character XP progression
- Item/Weapon designs
- Enemies
- Spells
- Items/Equipment
I appreciate any feedback.
I would love to see reference to any computer games that have implemented this system.
Thanks in advance

Re: Using Basic Fantasy for a Computer RPG
I get asked for permission to use the game for a computer RPG every few months, but I've never seen one finished. Would be interesting.
FYI... the OGL doesn't give you any rights when it comes to creating a computer RPG using any OGL-covered game. You always need to ask for permission. Well, actually, if you published full source code for free, you'd be in the clear, but that's the only way you could do it as far as I know.
So you need permission. Email me and I'll give it to you. I'd love to see one of these things get done.

Will do! Thanks for the response, and apologies for the naive assumption on licensing.
I emailed you.
