I might have been misreading you - are you nominating 3 hexes for the day, or are you just setting a general course for the next few days?
On this occasion I read it as your course for the day, and allocated 2 hours evenly per hex. It's kinda too late to change it now, because stuff has happened.
In future could you either pick 2 hexes at 3 hours, or, 3 hexes at at 2 hours, or some other combination that adds up to 6 hours. It will save confusion.
I know it seems slow but searching 9 square miles of forest really would take a while.
I'm sorry for causing the confusion, especially since I was nominating three hexes. I meant those as a general course of action and assuming searches in the same hex could span days if needed. Thinking about this in game-world terms, a strict hex approach ends up with six hours and two hexes/day. That's ok by me. But If the party moved faster, they'd have eight hours/day. Where would the extra two hours go if they move slower? The elves get tired from the intensity of the search? The dwarf has more time to bathe, perhaps?
If the party's available search time is eight hours, would it be ok to treat the daily rate of 3 hours/hex as 2.5 hexes/day (3+3+1.5) with spillover on the last hex of the current day and the first hex of day+1?
Or if fractions are too problematic, I'll interpret it as long-term encumbrance issues. No armor -> full eight hours/day. Leather armor -> six hours/day. Metal armor -> ??.
But seriously, I'm just trying to understand the mechanics better. I'm ok with two hexes/day of a thorough search and three hexes/day when marking a trail.
