Your "credit" works like this.

A well established party with one or more trading interests in the city of Waterdeep (the city surrounding where you are now) will get noticed by the Lords of Waterdeep. Once that party is recognized as being prosperous the other vendors and to a lesser extent the other Lords will see that party as a good investment. Credit for items will be extended against what the Lords think is an "investment in the future of Waterdeep".

Lets say the COS has one well fared trading post. That post deals in rare items, strange items and oddities from below Undermountain. The nobles will want some of those items to wear at the local gatherings. When asked "where did you get that?" the nobles will puff a bit and say "Oh our man at the Dragons Apothecary brought this back at substantial cost and peril, isn't it grand!" Now if you are a man of the group that funds the Dragons Apothecary then you carry some weight with the locals due to the nobles "sporting" your wares. That bit of clout will allow you to purchase items, lets say a suit of Dwarven made Plate Mail +5, at a discount and with only your chits stamp in a wax marker as payment. You will of course have to pay the merchant within a set amount of time, usually 6 months. It offers you the ability to outfit yourself to go and get more gold, and more credit.. and better equipment to get more gold... and more credit.... etc.

Currently your credit is close to nill. Your shop is new, your group is new although promising. You could try to bluff your way into something based on your own abilities to recoup any losses.

So where did Rykken get the 700 gp? Was that equity that he has in his business?
I will be trying to sell some of the stuff before we leave if that makes any difference.
The problem with doing something really stupid to impress people is that they may just be impressed by how stupid you really are.

That was why I said he left without the money lol. You wouldn't have 700 gold even if you didn't loan me 200

Damn. I'd actually overlooked that part of it. We'll say it was equity or something. Sorry about that folks.

Thats what happens to ne'er-do-wells who are up to no good, they sometimes forget to complete the important part.

... meanwhile, on the path leading away from the city, a dwarf cackles and congratulates himself on the scam he just ran. "hehehehe, I'll be living pretty neck deep in hookers in the next town I come too. And still have plenty of gold left in my purse."

He pats his purse in glee, then comes to a screeching halt. The dust of the trail rises up around him. He pats his purse frantically then rips it off his belt to look inside. He re-runs the conversation with the mark back at the Apothecary and stops when he remembers the handshake and then the quick exit without ....

""NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" .

I'm having a bit of a hard time deciphering our young messengers words here

My master offers this to the map maker of the COS. A gold piece is required, payed to me, for the script. You will mark your choices upon the script. Payment is due within 3 hours. I'll wait down stairs for your choices.

Is that not a map? I ask because the kid asked for the Map Maker? I just hit things hard with my maul..
