Thanks for sharing this.
Vance is also one of my favorite authors.
I actually played DnD long before discovering Jack Vance and I only got to liking "Vancian magic" after reading his story "Mazirian the Magician".

Me too, though I had read a great deal of fantasy prior to playing D&D. I think one of the differences between Old School and the current crop of rpg players is our influences. A lot of the newer players never read the classics like "The Incompleat Enchanter" or the ERB novels. Their influences are more likely to be anime, TV, and movies.

Another series I really liked in how it approached magic was the Magic by the Numbers series by Lyndon Hardy.

A wizard of Earthsea was also very influential.

Reading: Just finished Freedom's Challenge, book 4 in Anne McCaffrey's Freedom Series.

I came to Basic D&D in the mid '80s not having read much fantasy. It was the Inspirational Reading section of the AD&D DM's Guide that got me started.

Listening: The ringing in my right ear due to an ear infection (TMI?). Musically, I was listening to some light Jazz while I wrapped up work earlier.

Other: Rhythm guitar and vocals. The ear infection, however, played merry hob at rehearsal tonight.

Hehe I started re-reading them when I saw they were available in Kindle versions. It doesn't seem to be the "case" for You Be the Jury (sorry had to make that pun!) so I just might have to order the paperbacks for that.

Ditto. While I do still love and even prefer the experience of holding a hard copy book, the convenience of having a whole library on a single device cannot be denied. I'm usually reading five or so books simultaneously. My ebook reader allows me to make my short attention span work for me.

I used to keep a sort of card catalog of notes. I've found the note taking feature of the Kindle to be excellent. It's much easier for me to search notes for future reference, so I've pretty much gone 90% to ebooks for professional and personal development. I only buy the hard copy if an ebook isn't available or I was impressive enough for me to want it in my library.

And, I tend to move a lot. Packing and moving books sucks monkey butt through a straw. This last move I got rid of six boxes of books. Ebooks are much easier to move ;-).

But to avoid hijacking the tread...

Reading: "Confessions" by Augustine of Hippo.

Listening: "Living on a Prayer" Bon Jovi (hmm, coincidence?).

Watching: My son play Temple Run.
