Player character insanity?

Post by black1blade »

So the adventurers are trapped in the dungeon and a lot of people are grievously wounded so they are staying in a small room in the dungeon to heal up. Being in such a closed place for at least 5 days (well at least 10 days for the very wounded horse) would probably make people a tad bit unhinged. There are already tables for insanity and stuff out there but what system would you recommend to determine if the PCs start to go crazy?

There are lots of possible ways depending on how fast or easy you want to go.

1d6 + Cha mod per Level as a "Sanity pool", depending on the situation characters suffer from "sanity draining", once Sanity = 0 the pc is Insane.

Sanity Saving Throw using the One Value ST, each situation or day requires a ST, if unsuccessful bad things start to happen to the character.

Forget insanity, what's their food supply like? And they brought a horse down the dungeon's stairs? ;)

Food supplies are at two weeks per person. There is also a source of water...
Entrance to the dungeon was through a cave mouth where the party left the horses...

Said cave mouth is now very destroyed. But yeah they have a lot of food XD. Made sure to actually sort out all the equipment and stuff because I've kinda lost sight of that because it's not as important for higher level characters.

Is there enough clean air? Does the nights get cold as to lit a fire? Is there enough light? Does daylight reaches them? Can they manage to tell how much time has passed?

They are in a poorly ventilated area with no natural light and with no way of tracking time... just roleplay them to madness, they will lose track of time and sleeping disorders could kick in, making a fire in a place with no ventilation is a hazardous thing.

Tell them you'll give them extra EXP for impressions of people going nuts through cabin fever.

250 exp for the best paranoid ("you guys are stealing my oatmeal again!")
250 exp for the best emotional spillover ("I just want you to know I always loved you guys!!")

etc.
