Okay, sounds like you are all sleeping in the cellar, and you are planning to stand watches. I'll need to know what the watch order is.

Grumm will take the first watch (I guess 2 hours). If we have iron spikes, I suggest pounding a few into the floor and then lacing them with rope, our captive beneath them, spread eagle, so he can't move a muscle.

Will 2nd watch screw up Timorel getting the spell - does he need 8 solid hours of sleep?

I'm always for the MU and cleric taking last watch so they can spend that time studying and or praying

I've always assumed that if a MU/Cleric is preparing spells, he can't effectively be on watch.
I'd be interested in hearing Solomoriah's take on watch & regaining spells.
However, whatever the case is, we'll make that & breakfast happen and (barring vengeful dwarf incursion, etc.) get going.

A character who is recovering spells is not as alert as one who is just watching out; I'd increase the odds of surprise by 1 or 2 on 1d6 if all characters in the watch group are doing that.

Sounds fair - good rule.

I had assumed that someone doing something wouldn't be as alert as someone totally focused on watch. Mostly just need to watch the door to the underworld. We could set a few trip lines to rattle some cans up here if anyone comes up the stairs to help out.
