Nivek, please use your dwarven senses to see if we are standing on or under moving stonework, says Paladin calmly, all while looking at the lever. Paladin looks to see if he can tell from here whether the other door is ajar.

Nivek takes his time to inspect the stonework in the area (including the floor) and gestures for our roguish boys to do their part as well. "Something seems very wrong about this," he remarks questioningly.
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Leaving doors and walls to those more knowledgeable in such things, Mandross turns his eyes to the room.
"What do you think? Is this staged to discourage newcomers, or has someone been through ahead of us?"Mandross will start looking at the materials scattered across the floor - looking at what's there, and looking for inconsistencies in the scatterings and the broken and overturned furniture, and signs of illusion-work. He will also look for signs of violence - blood amongst the wreckage.

Doughbert begins checking the floor, walls and ceiling immediately outside the passage, he'll also inspect the doorknob now that the door is open looking for the trigger to the trap, buts suggests, "I'd feel a lot better out here if no one touches that lever. I don't think this is a set-up. Given that we were already attacked by rotting men well outside the city, we can believe the genie is out of the bag already."

Trapdoor

Post Mon Mar 05, 2012 2:53 pm

Using his dwarven stonework skills, Nivek discovers that there is a hidden trapdoor in the floor just outside the door. A bit of careful experimentation from Doughbert reveals that the trap is triggered when someone turns the door handle clockwise (Tannen got lucky!). The trapdoor conceals a 12' deep pit.

Paladin peers across the room. The door in the southern wall is closed.

Mandross checks out the debris. It all seems very real and mundane - furniture, mugs, plates, bits of paper, books, empty boxes of various sizes, and so on. Everything that could have been opened or emptied has been, perhaps suggesting that someone was looking for something. There's certainly nothing of any apparent value left in the room.

Paladin will usher Benoni to the middle of the room to hold the lantern high. He'll then look at, but not touch the lever. After that, he'll listen at the closed door. Benoni looks for blood on the floor.

Nivek snickers a bit at the discovery of the pit mechanism, "Glad I was not the one turning the knob!"

Is there any sounds of activity beyond the door?

"Lets keep moving then boys" remarks Nivek as we determine there is not much besides trash here.

My guess is the lever resets the pit trap. Can Nivek determine if that is the case or not?

Is there any indication of how long ago the room was turned over? Temperature of any food scraps, any spilled wine that has dried or soaked into anything over time? Any sings of combat (blood, broken furniture)? Any foot or hand prints in the debris?

Otherwise, yeah let's keep moving.
