Swiftly Despatched

Initiative
Doughbert: 4 + 2 = 6
Hiker: 5 + 1 = 6
Nivek: 5
Paladin: 2 + 3 = 5
Tannen: 3
Halfling bandit: 2 + 1 = 3
Karl: 2
Human bandit: 1

With the initiative, Doughbert and Hiker each pull another arrow from their quivers and target the human bandit and halfling bandit respectively. [Modified "to hit" rolls: 6 for Doughbert, 6 for Hiker]. However, after their initial successes, both are high and wide with their second shots.

Paladin tries next, targetting his brother halfling (the bandit, not Doughbert!) ["to hit": 20]. His kinsman takes an arrow squarely in the chest [5 damage] and the diminutive bandit falls.

That just leaves the remaining human bandit. He's standing in the entrance to the cave mouth, so Nivek can't easily get behind him. Instead the Forge Lord's disciple moves forward and swipes at the outlaw with his mace ["to hit: 13"]. The blow connects solidly [6 damage] and the final bandit is swiftly despatched.

Nivek immediately heads to cave entrance (but not necessarily into the cave), where he will attempt to ascertain whether there are more bandits to worry about. He will then try to regroup with the others.

Doughbert moves to the bodies and begins to rifle through their pockets and clothing, removing their boots to see if anything is hid in them.

Tannen arrives in Nivek's wake and retrieves his hand axe, sliding it back into his belt. Next he retrieves one of the bandit's crossbows and searches the dead man for quarrels.

Once Nivek has determined if there are more bandits hidden within, Tannen will signal for the remaining members of the party to move up to the entrance, signalling the need to remain quiet (largely for Hiker's benefit) with a finger held up to his lips.

With the bandits felled, Karl will try to retrieve his handaxe - assuming it didn't go flying into the cave. After that he will keep an eye on out for trouble while Doughbert is looting, and Nivek is scouting the cave opening.

Shield arm high, naturally.

Paladin will approach the cave mouth and cover it with his bow. You folk without missile weapons should each take a crossbow, he points out.

At the Entrance to the Bandit Caves

Nivek peers cautiously into the cave mouth, but can neither see nor hear any further bandits in the immediate vicinity. However, just inside the entrance, he does notice a small pile torches stacked alongside a covered iron bowl.

Whilst the others recover their missiles, Doughbert rifles through the clothing and footwear of the fallen bandits - he finds a total of 37 silver pieces, but little else of interest.

(There are 4 light crossbows available if anyone wants to take one. However, the bandits were sharing a single case of 20 bolts, so you'll have to distribute these out between you. Please update your inventories accordingly.)

Doughbert: HP 5/5. No '0' level spells remaining today.
Hiker: HP 9/9.
Karl: HP 8/8.
Nivek: HP 7/7. 2 '0' level spells remaining today.
Paladin: HP 3/4.
Tannen: HP 9/9.

Tannen takes one of the crossbows and 6 of the bolts. He'll grab any other bolts that are left over once the others have taken some.

Tannen loads the crossbow and keeps a sharp lookout for trouble while the others prepare to enter the cave.

Tannen squints into the cave, looking for any sign of light coming from within.

Doughbert packs away the silver pieces with the intention of splitting it up later. He'll then consider a cross bow but decides against it and says, "Crossbows are expensive, we should hide any we don't take and come back for them as loot if we have the time. That will also keep them out of the hands of any bandits that return this way."

Doughbert will then move to the cave mouth with the others and look around the immediate area of the cave mouth for any pit traps, ceiling nets, murder holes, or anything on the walls that would be a nasty surprise. When the others are ready he will grab a torch, check the iron bowl for any obvious traps then lift the lid, hoping to find a light source.

Nivek heeds the advice and grabs a crossbow and a few bolts (assuming immediate threats are not apparent). He likewise retrieves his throwing hammer.

Is the cave lit? If not does his darkvision reveal anything (he will step just into the darkness of the cave if necessary for eyes to adjust).

"Lets get out of the open ASAP," Nivek whispers to the group.
