[Assuming that Dougbert fetches Paladin]

Tannen whispers to the others in the group and instructs them to spread out slightly, to form an arc-like front, approximately 20 feet inside the tree-line. Close enough to have line of sight to the bandits for missile fire, but not so close as to loose cover or the element of surprise. The plan is for everyone to prepare missile weapons and loose them at the same time (Tannen will whistle the signal to initiate the signal to "fire!"). Tannen allocates each member of the party their own bandit to target. Since there are six party members, he breaks up the targets so that Nivek and Hiker share the same target and Tannen and Karl also target the same bandit (theory here being that the Halflings have the best to-hit chance with their shots and are more likely to score a lethal hit).

Once missiles have been loosed, Tannen, Nivek and Karl can charge in to melee any survivors.

Suggestions?

(doughbert's to hit from short range is +4. )

Doughbert quietly moves to retrieve Paladin and tells him the plans once we're out of ear shot of the bandits

Nivek moves into position and then waits for the order.

OOC: Nivek will be quite straightforward when order is given. He will throw his hammer while closing any distance to get to melee range as quickly as possible. If it is possible, he will try to maneuver to the flanks (compared to the rest of the party) to cut off any retreat back to cave.

Just holding for Paladin (and Karl / Hiker if they're still here ...)

Paladin gets off his duff and scurries through the brush muttering, We could have just shot them at the front gate. We were already there!

The party assembles in accordance with Tannen's plan, encircling the southerly cave entrance. Upon Tannen’s whistle, you launch your volley of missiles on the unsuspective guards (you have surprise for the ambush). Doughbert, Hiker and Paladin fire their shortbows from their hiding places inside the tree-line. Karl, Nivek and Tannen move forward to the edge of the treeline (to close to within "short" range) before hurling their thrown weapons.

[Modified "to hit" rolls for Doughbert, Hiker, Karl, Nivek, Paladin and Tannen respectively: 23, 19, 7, 17, 12, 9].

Against the bandits’ leather armour (AC 13), Doughbert, Hiker and Nivek all find their mark. [Damage rolls: 6, 3 and 1 respectively]. One of the human bandits falls to Dougbert's arrow, Hiker seriously wounds another, and Nivek's warhammer finishes the second one off.

The two remaining bandits briefly consider their options [morale check: pass], but resolve to fight back.

Actions for the first round proper please. You’re facing a human and a halfling, both uninjured and looking like they’re preparing to return fire with their crossbows ...

Doughbert: HP 5/5. No '0' level spells remaining today.
Hiker: HP 9/9.
Karl: HP 8/8.
Nivek: HP 7/7. 2 '0' level spells remaining today.
Paladin: HP 3/4.
Tannen: HP 9/9.

Paladin, of course, keeps firing. He shoots at the halfling, poor misguided brother.

Feeling a bit of kindred with the halfling bandit, Doughbert aims for the human and looses another arrow.

Tannen spits out his words in a harsh whisper:

"Get them!!"

Tannen raises his shield and draws his sword, leaping over a fallen log and forcing his way through the undergrowth, he sprints [a charge] towards the nearest bandit. Focus on the enemy, focus on the enemy...

[OOC: Tannen is hoping that he can get to the nearest bandit before he can shoot his crossbow, i.e. that he wins initiative! I considered having him wait until the bandits shoot their crossbows, but that makes it more likely that they'll call for help. *crosses fingers that Tannen (or the groups missile shooters!) can roll high on initiative*] There's also the chance that they might surrender when confronted by Tannen's awesomeness!

(as stated), Nivek rushes to close the distance and/or attempt to get in position to impede or block the bandits from retreat or running off to sound alarm. "By the will of the Forge Lord!!"
