Seems a little unusual, if we were to follow the north-west trail would we end up close to the old man's cave? Or is the curvature of our path such that we've actually covered some actual displacement from the old man's cave? I suppose it's unrealistic to expect to have more than a vague idea of where we are... Hmmm mm mm.]
OK, I can see how my description might have been a little confusing. This picture might help, though please bear ( ) in mind that it's not to scale and/or the relative distances might not be in the right proportions.

It took you about an hour and a half to walk to the gobin caves yesterday. Today you've been walking for around two hours or so. As far as you can tell, you're nowhere near the forest's edge.

If no one has any better ideas, I'd suggest we take the path to the northwest. And be alert to trouble, it looks like our escort is on a break. With bandits in these parts, we'd best be careful.

[OOC Thanks for the map, Joe. That makes more sense now!]

Hiker, per usual listened to the thoughts of the Sergeant and Dwarf keeping Karl in sight so as to act "properly" guardish. His bow is ready but the soppiness of the day has him a bit melancholy and yearning for some home cooked bread from his Mama's kitchen.

doughbert will take this respite to examine his bowstring to see how the weather has effected it. If it looks like it won't shoot due to it being to wet he will unstring it and shove it into his breaches to let it dry (the string, not the bow). He will then examine the terrain. Does one trail lead to a higher elevation than another or are we on flat ground? He is looking for anything that might suggest that one trail will lead to a good ambush location over the other trail. Are there any tracks that we might ascertain are more fresh than the others. After his investigation of the trail he will return to the others. How thick is the forest here? Is possible for two short halflings to move in the trees along side the trail without being seen from the trail, but still keep the trail in sight?

"I suggest we should reconnoiter up each trail a short distance to see what we can see before making a decision on which one to take."

OOC: Love the map!

Definitely northwest! After all, the trail loops around from that direction. If they could have gotten there more directly they would have! exhorts Paladin. Paladin plays Dance with Barnie from a Distance before they head off, whichever way the group heads off.

Both trails are broadly similar. They are both equally worn, with neither showing tracks that are any more or less fresh than the other. They are also both generally level, and cut through forest of similar density.

Upon the suggestion of Tannen and Paladin, the two halflings sneak off to check out the north-westerly fork. Rather than travelling along the trail directly, they observe it's path from the adjacent forest taking best advantage of the cover provided by the foliage.

After a short-distance, perhaps 20 yards or so, Doughbert and Paladin begin to hear voices ahead. The chatter is in the common tongue, and the accents sound human. Although you're not close enough yet to get a visual on source, you estimate that there are at least three people ahead. They don't seem to be talking about anything very interesting - mainly grumbling about the wet weather and discussing what to have for lunch.

Doughbert: HP 5/5. No '0' level spells remaining today.
Hiker: HP 9/9.
Karl: HP 8/8.
Nivek: HP 7/7. 2 '0' level spells remaining today.
Paladin: HP 3/4.
Tannen: HP 9/9.

Doughbert stops his movement and whispers to Paladin, "I'll stay and keep watch here in case these folks decide to head toward the group if you will report back to the group and tell them what we've found. I suspect they may be guards protecting the entrance to the bandit camp."

Paladin nods and scuttled back to the others. Found the bandits, he reports. Barnue won't probably eat them because they and the old man get along ok. If we talk to them here in Barnie's presense they might not immediately pincushion us and take our stuff.

Nivek nods in agreement, "Yes, lets not be hasty. They do not know us. We need to make certain they know we come as friends of the hermit."
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?
