Nivek follows Tannen's lead, grumbling his displeasure that the plan did not pan out. He then brightens a bit, calling out to his comrades, "shall we simply engage them then, eh?"

I figured the fact that Tannen ordered Hiker to shoot something, which it then turned out Hiker couldn't see, would lead to the inevitable Hiker brain meltdown.
OOC: Tis probably true OR he would have simply shot down the tunnel simply because he was told to do so. Just a thought for future meltdown considerations. :)

Karl knows that it's the militia lineman's job to protect the archers, and seeing an archer move forward, Karl moves to protect him. He also knows oil is bad and tries to jump over our oil.

ooc: karl moves to position himself in front of Hiker giving the other man a clear shot, but also protection.

"Yes. Quick, let's all get back into position. The plan remains as the same as before, just this time they will be less likely to fall for our ambush. If things go badly, retreat into the woods and head for the old man's cave."

Tannen will quickly shove the goblin corpse into the middle of the oil before returning to his position, south of the junction in the main north-south corridor.

Doughbert stays where he was and draws another arrow,

Goblin Battle in the Coastwood Caves - Rounds 2 and 3

You re-set your positions, Tannen shoving the goblin corpse into the middle of the oil puddle as he does so.

Meanwhile, the goblins charge noisily down the corridor towards you, whooping and shouting and boasting of the various unmentionable things they plan to do to the halflings. They pause momentarily for a brief whispered exchange just round the corner from you (they're too quiet for Nivek to hear), before collectively letting out a blood-curdling scream as they throw themselves headlong into battle.

So, we're at the start of round 4. The goblins are close, but just out of sight in the darkness round the corner.

Initiative

Hiker: 5 + 1 = 6
Goblin(s): 6
Goblin(s): 5
Karl: 4
Goblin(s): 4
Nivek: 3
Paladin: 1 + 2 = 3
Doughbert: 1 + 1 = 2
Goblin(s): 2
Tannen: 1
Goblin(s): 1

((You don't know exactly how many goblins there are at the moment, so I haven't numbered them. But rest assured, I've done the initiative fairly for the goblins - it's not necessarily the case that the goblins with high initiative rolls are at the front of the pack)).

Actions for round 4 please.

Doughbert, after muttering a prayer to Loche, loosens an arrow at the first goblin he sees and then moves behind the big fellows to get out of melee range

Hiker, reset his position on Tannen's command and now has the rope with Karl on the opposite side ... he jumps instinctively at the yelling but watches Karl and remains glued to the rope with his hands and begins anew his internal mantra which trickles out his mouth in a bit of a whisper.

Rope, wait, goblins trip, hit goblins ... Rope, wait, goblins trip, hit goblins
