He yells in a hoarse whisper to his companions: "Quick, someone grab its arms and someone cover its mouth! Nivek, tell it we just want to talk!"
Not seeing any weapons, Tannen rushes the goblin. The goblin meanwhile is muttering something quickly under its breath and concentrating intently.
[
Following the wrestling rules, Tannen must make a successful melee attack to grab hold of the goblin and restrain it. Tannen rolls a 10 + 1 (attack bonus) + 2 (strength) = 13: hit!]. Tannen succeeds in manoevering himself into a position by which he can secure the goblin in a headlock.
However, just as Tannen begins his grapple, the goblin it completes its spell. [
Tannen must make a save versus Spells. He rolls a 16: a narrow fail]. All of sudden, Tannen is overwhelmed by an inexplicable sense of fear. In Tannen's eyes, the small goblin is transformed into the most terrifying creature ever to roam the land. Without hesitation, 'Sergeant' Tannen shrieks, does a quick about-face, and flees. The party can do little but look-on as their leader barges past them and runs back up the corridor towards the exit.

Hearing Tannen's call to arms, Hiker moves into action, then watched as Tannen, moved past him with great speed. But, perhaps it was a ruse. Hiker, very bad at reading emotion, just resumed attempting to execute his previous order. Hiker quickly sheathed his sword, dropped his torch to the ground and executed a flying tackle manuever which due to his limited ability to foresee the structure of the future will likely be all too hard, but it was aimed directly at the goblin.

Nivek rushes forward as the attack begins and just as he is about to communicate with the goblin, Nivek realizes the goblin is a spell caster (reinforced by the otherwise brave Tannen turning tail and screaming like a little school-girl... "we still just want to talk," Nivek unconvincingly tries to say to the goblin, as he rushes forward, mace & shield in hand.
[ooc] if I see the goblin attempt to surrender, then Nivek will let up. Otherwise, Nivek is too un-nerved by the fact that he can cast magic... and will continue his rush to engage the goblin with his mace.

Paladin draws his bow, aims at the fleeing figure, and then thinks better of it. He'll position himself so that if the goblin breaks past the others, he can shoot it.

((Hmmm … initiative is going to be important here … will Hiker tackle the goblin to the ground before Nivek clubs it to death?)).
Initiative
Hiker: 5
Nivek: 3
Goblin: 3
Tannen: fleeing
Resolutely following his leader’s orders, Hiker burst through the curtain and hurls himself at the goblin. [Again we’ll use the wrestling rules. Hiker rolls a 12 + 1 (attack bonus) = 13: success!]. 155 lbs of Hiker collides with 40 lbs of goblin. Hiker’s momentum bundles the two of you across the floor towards the far corner of the room, but when you come to a halt, Hiker emerges on top with the goblin pinned beneath him.
The goblin attempts to throw Hiker off [save vs. Death Ray: fails]. The attempt is in vain. Hiker has the goblin shaman secured and alive.
Tannen meanwhile has sought refuge in the safest place he can think of - up a tree just beside Barnaby.

Tannen: HP 5/9. Suffering from 'fear'.

Tannen clings to the branches for dear life. Hoping and praying that the goblin-demon doesn't emerge from the cave and that if it does, that it will prefer the taste of bear flesh to that of a human. He realizes, too late, that the torch and sword that he dropped at the foot of the tree will give him away. Hopefully that goblin-demon is REALLY stupid...

Sorry, I should also have mentioned that, now that Hiker is up close and personal with the goblin, he's almost certain that it was one of the three that was involved in Alma's abduction. It was the one that, in the words of Alan Grenewell, "... did something to Alma that seemed to fix her rigid".

I remember:

That means we need to look out for the big, bare-chested one with the helmet...]

[ooc: Perhaps Hiker has some NFL in his future...GO HIKER!!]
Hiker held the little goblin hard and as recognition dawned Hiker, a big fan of the pretty and kind Miss Alma, squeezed really hard onto the unkempt shaman.
"What did you do to Miss Alma, mr. Goblin man?" Hiker breathed into the goblins ear as his arms and legs coiled around the vermin like a boa ready to snap his tiny bones. Of course to the goblin the comment likely sounded like gibberish.
