Tannen runs towards the wolves, quickly trying to gauge the situation he notices that one of the wolves is wounded. Remembering his military training, yells to his companions: "Focus you blows on the wounded one!!".

If it is possible to throw his hand axe as he closes in, without losing the opportunity for a melee attack, Tannen will do so. Otherwise he closes in on the wounded wolf with his long sword raised, preferably from it's flank or rear to get in the best blow he can.

Paladin will tuck his feet up high to avoid snapping wolf teeth and ride Jumbles through the battle over to the fallen Hiker. If the wolves follow him, paladin will keep holding his feet high while screaming, "Poor poor Jumbles!" If the wolves focus on the others and leave poor Jumbles and Paladin alone, he'll say "Good doggies!" very loudly and bind Hiker's ragged wounds.

Coastwood Wolves - Round 9

Post Fri Feb 04, 2011 8:10 am

OK, let’s see how this works out ...

Initiative
Paladin: 3 + 2 (dexterity) + 1 (halfling) = 6.
Tannen: 6
Nivek: 5.
Wolf 2: 5.
Wolf 1: 3 (wounded).
Karl: 2.
Wolf 3: 1.
Dougbert: unconscious.
Hiker: unconscious.

Paladin steers Jumbles towards the fallen Hiker. He can’t quite make it this round (he’s still 10 -15 feet away), but he’ll reach Hiker’s side next round and will be able to make a start on binding his wounds.

Tannen heads straight for the wounded Wolf 1. He swings his longsword [6 + 3 = 9: miss], but the wolf dodges the incoming blow.

Nivek is able to advance to just beyond Wolf 3 whilst still getting in a shot with his mace [8 + 2 = 10: miss].

[Nivek is in range to cast a Cure Minor Wounds on Doughbert next round if he wishes to do so - this would prevent him from attacking with his mace, although he could of course defend himself]

Wolf 2 closes in on Tannen, but misses spectacularly. The injured Wolf 1 retaliates against Tannen, but its jaws are rebuffed by Tannen’s mighty armour.

Karl, somewhat slow of the mark, follows the lead of his sergeant and homes in on Wolf 1 [7 + 2 = 9]. Clearly, like the rest of the party, he’s still finding his range.

Wolf 3 concludes the round with a grazing bite to Nivek’s arm [1 damage].

[Sorry for the lousy rolls guys ...]

Doughbert: HP (-8/5) … will die at -10
Hiker: HP (-7/9) … will die at -14
Nivek: (6/7)

Nivek invokes the Forge Lord's power as he steps toward Doughbert while defending himself from the wolf. "RENEW THYSELF friend" [Cure Minor Wounds, 1hp healed; 2 more orisons left this day].

With a nod that he successfully kept his friend's inner forge from extinguishing, he looks over at the other fallen member. Seeing help arriving for him in the form of young Paladin, Nivek turns to the wolf that nipped him, "Bad Dog!"
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Coastwood Wolves - Round 10

Post Fri Feb 04, 2011 11:00 am

Round 10

Initiative
Paladin: 6 + 2 (dexterity) + 1 (halfling) = 9.
Karl: 6.
Tannen: 5.
Nivek: 5.
Wolf 2: 1.
Wolf 1: 1 (wounded).
Wolf 3: 1.
Dougbert: unconscious.
Hiker: unconscious.

[Nice initiative rolls … your luck’s improving]

Paladin applies immediate pressure to Hiker’s wounds, stopping the flow of blood. He begins to improvise some bindings as a more permanent fix.

Karl, getting into his stride, slashes with his longsword at Wolf 1 [19 + 2 = 21: hit! for 3 + 1 = 4 damage]. Wolf 1 is now severely wounded and can barely continue. Tannen tries to finish it off [5 + 3 = 8: miss], but can't quite do so.

With the divine aid of The Forge Lord, Nivek staunches the flow of blood from Doughbert's wounds and turns back to face the wolves.

Wolf 2 has another bite at Tannen, but misses yet again. Wolf 1, increasingly desperate, fights back against Karl, but it’s more of a nasty suck than a bite [1 damage]. Wolf 3 takes advantage of Nivek’s momentary distraction, and delivers a stinging bite as a follow-up to last round’s attack [2 damage].

Round 11

Initiative
Paladin: 4 + 2 (dexterity) + 1 (halfling) = 7.
Nivek: 6.
Tannen: 5.
Karl: 3.
Wolf 2: 1.
Wolf 1: 1 ( badly wounded).
Wolf 3: 1.
Dougbert: unconscious.
Hiker: unconscious.

Paladin continues to bind Hiker’s wounds.

Nivek, back in combat, swings his mace at Wolf 3 [18 + 2 = 20: hit! for 5 + 1 = 6 damage]. It’s a crushing blow, and Wolf 3 now looks as badly injured as Wolf 1.

Tannen, keen to get in on the action, tries again with his longsword against Wolf 1 [17 + 3 = 20: hit! for 2 + 2 = 4 damage]. The fourth direct hit against Wolf 1 finally finishes it off.

With Wolf 1 despatched, Karl turns his longsword against Wolf 2 [2 + 2 = 4: miss], but the change of focus is enough to put him off his stride.

Wolf 3, clearly shaken by Nivek’s no-nonsense approach, misses badly. Wolf 2 though is still going strong and manages finally to find a way through Tannen’s shield and armour [4 damage].

Round 12

Initiative
Paladin: 6 + 2 (dexterity) + 1 (halfling) = 9.
Tannen: 5
Wolf 2: 5
Nivek:4.
Karl: 4.
Wolf 3: (badly wounded).
Dougbert: unconscious.
Hiker: unconscious.
Wolf 1: dead.

Seemingly oblivious to the carnage around him, Paladin continues to tend to Hiker’s wounds.

In line with his strategy of finishing off an injured wolf before starting on a fresh one, Tannen turns to lend a hand to Nivek with Wolf 3 [5 + 3 = 8: miss].

Wolf 2, buoyed by its success in the previous round continues against Tannen, although this time the fighter’s armour does its job.

Nivek attempts to show Tannen how it’s done against Wolf 3 [18 + 2 = 10: hit! for 7 + 1 = 8 damage] and claims the kill outright for himself. That just leaves Wolf 2 as the only wolf still standing.

Karl attempts to remedy that situation [20 + 2 = 22: impressive! for 2 + 1 = 3 damage].

The remaining wolf assesses it’s options [moral check: pass]. It decides to fight to the death, continuing to hurl itself against Tannen’s defences, but its attempt is almost futile.

Round 13

Initiative
Paladin: 4 + 2 (dexterity) + 1 (halfling) = 7.
Tannen: 4
Karl:3.
Wolf 2: 1
Nivek:1.
Dougbert: unconscious.
Hiker: unconscious.
Wolf 1: dead.
Wolf 3: dead.

First-aider Paladin continues his fine work.

Tannen [15 + 3 = 18: hit! for 2 + 2 = 4 damage] and Karl [4 + 2 = 6: miss] continue their attacks against the remaining wolf with mixed success.

But the wolf’s not finished yet, and with one last mighty effort takes Tannen out of the equation [6 damage - ouch!]. Tannen joins Hiker and Doughbert on the forest floor.

Nivek, finally, uses his mace to bring proceedings to a close [17 + 2 = 19: hit! for 3 + 1 = 4 damage] - dead.

[Phew!]

Doughbert: HP -7/5 … stabilised
Hiker: HP -7/9 … stabilised
Karl: HP 7/8
Nivek: HP 4/7; 2 ‘0’ level spells remaining today
Tannen: HP -1/9 … bleeding
Oh, and Paladin? unscathed of course

[exciting!!]

Nivek will move to assist in binding various wounds. Seeing the bulk of the party worn down heavily, Nivek sighs, "we need to get ourselves cleaned up a bit. We should mark our trail well so we can get back here easily enough."

Nivek looks about for the trail the wolves followed. "Praps somebody might climb a tree and see if there are signs nearby of these gobs?"
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Experience Points

Post Fri Feb 04, 2011 1:23 pm

The three wolves net you a total of 225 XP, or 37 XP each. Plus you can each take 100 XP for sucessfully defeating the wolves. Actually, I thought you recovered the situation rather well, albeit barely; there was a time when I thought Doughbert and Hiker were certain to die. Overall, that makes 150 XP for Tannen, Karl and Hiker, and 137 XP for Doughbert, Nivek and Paladin.

I'll prepare and maintain a summary of all the XP you earn throughout the adventure and put it in the Character Roster topic.

Hiker had some BRUTAL luck and I too thought he was gonna take an early Dirt Nap.

Should I update my PC sheet with the XP myself?

[ooc: Thanks much to Paladin and crew, Hiker will, upon consciousness, be quite thankful]
