Season 1 - Episode 3: Into the Coastwood

[ooc] How far away is the remainder of our group? Would we be close enough to hear the activity (such as a wolf howl/bark), so that we might close the distance faster?

[Well, let's do a quick calculation. It was stated that the main party would set off 20 minutes behind Doughbert and Hiker. The party's base movement rate now that you have Jumbles is 20', which according to the Wilderness Movement Rates equates to 6 miles per day (adjusted for forest), or 3/4 of a mile per hour. However, both groups are moving especially cautiously, so let's say your actually moving at half that rate. If I've got my sums correct, that puts you at something like 200 - 250 yards behind. Given that Hiker has just screamed as a result of the wolf bite he sustained, I'll say 'yes', you hear his shout]

Upon hearing a scream out in the distance in the direction of our general path, Nivek exclaims, "Sounds like Trouble Boys!! Lets Go!" and takes off like the natural sprinter that all dwarves are! [ooc - of course sarcasm]

[Nivek keeps with the party, but otherwise presses the party for quickest movement possible in that direction]

Karl knows the need for speed in getting to their scouts, but also knows that a militia is much more powerful than a single fighter, so he lets the dwarf lead and moves as fast as Nevik can manage.

"Hang on scouts," Karl says to himself, "aid is on the way... hang on."

[ooc to Smoot - It's sunny and 72 degrees in Venice, CA... a light breeze, butterflies, girls in bikinis...]

Doughbert backs away making a fighting retreat (p45-46). If he is still within range to attack he will but would prefer to get away carefully.

ooc: yeah we have blizzad conditions in NorthEast Missouri. Talking 18-24 inches before it's over. Atleast that much.

Tannen quickly tethers Jumbles to the nearest tree, grabs his shield, sword and axe* and follows Nivek and Karl as they hustle towards the sound of the commotion.

"Lets stay close together and be wary of an ambush, who knows what's going on up there?!" Then, much louder he bellows: "We're coming, we're coming!!"

*without the encumbrance of his backpack, Tannen is only lightly loaded in his chain mail (move 20')

Since Sergeant Tannen has staged the gear, Karl will take the time to drop off his backpack as well, then sprint forward toward the fight.

[occ: Karl moves at 30' without his backpack, so he'll be able to catch up to Nivek and Tannen]

Initiative
Doughbert: 6 + 1 (dexterity) + 1 (halfling) = 8.
Wolf 1: 6.
Wolf 2: 3.
Hiker: 1 + 1 (dexterity) = 2
Wolf 3: 2.

Doughbert begins his fighting withdrawal, edging away from Wolf 1 whilst continuing to battle with his shortsword [15 + 1 = 16: a hit!]. Finally one of your blows finds its mark, and it’s a firm strike - 5 damage to the wolf.

Undeterred, Wolf 1 continues its assault on the halfling, but this time its jaws miss their intended target.

Meanwhile, Hiker continues his struggle against Wolves 2 and 3 with his freshly drawn warhammer. As he readies the weapon, Wolf 2’s attack misses. Hiker retaliates [7 + 1 = 8: a miss], but he also fails to register a hit. Wolf 3 seizes its opportunity and launches a vicious attack, sinking it’s teeth into Hiker’s unprotected torso for 6 damage. Hiker falls, incapacitated and losing blood.

[So Hiker is currently on -1 hit point and unconscious. He will continue to lose 1 hit point per round through blood loss until he dies at -14 hit points (his negative constitution). The blood loss can be stopped through some sort of first aid (binding the wounds or magical healing)].

The others break into a run in the direction of the sounds of combat. You’re currently 220 yards away. By sticking to the speed of the slowest party member, Tannen, you make up 40 yards, leaving you still 180 yards away from the action.

[Shall I continue along the same lines, with Doughbert tactically withdrawing (albeit at only 15' per round) and the others closing as a unit? At the present rate it'll be five rounds before the main party reaches the scouts].

Not knowing specifically what is going on ahead of us, Nivek continues to charge headlong towards the disturbance. However, because of the yells, wolf noises, our previous encounter with wolves, and the fact that we were tracking 'wolf-riders', Nivek assumes the worst.... He readies his mace and shield as best he can while running. He mutters a prayer for protection to himself (a simple prayer, not a spell).

Hiker lays there bleeding.

doughberts options seem highly limited. If he retreat any faster w/ them eing able to free attack he will do it. If not he will continue as last round.

[as Nivek approaches and becomes aware of the situation (one down, another wounded by wolves), he will begin to yell and scream and otherwise draw the attention of the animals away from his comrades.]
