Hiker raised his head from Jumbles and through the fog of his limited stamina, he says weakly, "Bear!" and points at... well, the bear.

Paladin hides, uncorks his oil flask, drops it in his small sack, spins it about a bit, and then lights it on fire. He'll then make lots of noise while swinging his burning oil soaked sack. If the bear is not frightened off, he'll toss the burning sack onto the bear and follow it up with his second flask of oil.

"Prepare a bow, Tannen, and stand away from melee," Karl said as he put Doughbert down, drew his sword and shield and started banging blade to rim...

"Get on, Bear!, Get on Bear!"

Karl put himself between the bear and his injured colleagues.

Tannen makes sure that his hand axe is ready to throw in case the bear charges, but backs away slowly but steadily towards his gear. He intends to light a torch with which to intimidate the bear.

To his companions he whispers (as loud as he dares, so as not to draw too much attention to himself): "Stay back, but don't run or turn you back on the beast. Use the fire to intimidate and back away slowly. Very...slowly."

Barnaby

Post by JoeCarr28 »

The bear, still on its hind legs, tilts its head to one side and gazes-on at the increasingly bizarre scene unfolding before it. It seems neither intimidated, nor particularly aggressive, just curious. As Paladin’s fire dance reaches a crescendo, it lets out another, slightly higher-pitched, growl. This time, to your surprise, it receives a response, an impatient-sounding human voice from somewhere just behind it - “Alright Barnaby, I’m coming - what have you found?”

Seemingly from nowhere, a figure in a dirty grey/brown hooded robe appears beside the bear. He (for it is a man) pulls back the hood to get a better view of the bear's discovery, revealing a tangled mane of greying hair and an equally unkempt beard. Leaning on his staff, he says to the bear “Ahh ... we have some visitors”.

“OI! HALFLING! PUT OUT THAT FIRE OR YOU’LL BURN US ALL TO A CRISP” he shouts crossly in Paladin’s direction. “Dry summer … forest … fire … I think we’ve found ourselves some imbeciles Barnarby” he mutters out of the corner of his mouth to his furry companion. Then, back in the direction of the party, he continues more evenly “Can we help you?”

Paladin eyes the man, looking at his highly flammable robe, then he extinguishes the flames. You wouldn't happen to have a beer on you? he asks the man. Or some honey mead? he asks the bear.

Tannen lowers his hand axe and puts away his (unlit) torch.

"Forgive the little one. He's been through a lot just recently. I am Tannen." - Tannen also introduces the others.

"We had a skirmish with some wolves and are rather the worse for it." Here, Tannen glances at the towering form of the bear. "Uh, it was the wolves that attacked us and not the other way around, I assure you. We are looking for a woman who was abducted from a nearby farm a few days ago." Tannen glances at the bear and (briefly) back towards the direction of the smoke and suspected goblin encampment. "Perhaps we can head to a safe place to talk further?"

Hiker is shocked to see a man who keeps a bear as a dog-like pet, but is relieved that the tower of fur, claws, and teeth will not be the end of them. Relief floods his weakened frame as he leans forward onto Jumbles but says nothing.

Seeing the wounded Tannen maintaining his semblance of command, Karl stands down, marvels at Tannen's heroism and remains silent, like a good militia man should when the Sergeant is in control.
