I'll put it to a vote ....
Who wants me to apologize and who wants to see how this plays out. I'll vote last.

i'm not sure doughbert needs to apologize. kitchener is getting all baby-fussy over being called "bertie" and that's kind of... ridiculous, really.

I say apologise. I thought Tannen's response was a decent effort, but clearly there is something to this. 'Bertie' was what Morward called Kitchener IIRC and we know those guys go back a way. Kitchener is a locally powerful individual. In your typical medieval fantasy setting - which Marketstone appears to be - these kind of guys are used to getting what they want. No 'freedom of speech' here methinks.
If the vote comes out against apologizing, run away rather than shoot. Killing some of Kitchener's goons will seriously derail our hopes of future employment.

Re: Out-of-Character Chat
Lessee, Bertie's goggling like a landed trout, Donny's demonstrating his mastery of 1st grade arithmetic, Shaw is confused as all get out (and understandably so). It's funny. If the ENTIRE FLIPPIN' TOWN hadn't been using "Bertie's Boys," I'd excuse ignorance. But again, the entire flippin' town... that ain't ignorace, that's evidence of bein' widely known... and acceptable parlance.
Mandross is all about manners, but that's just how he talks. Since all Bertie has done so far is demonstrate a need to be released back into the lake, I say Donny is acting under his own initiative, and drawing a weapon is not how one starts civil discourse. Clearly he needs to go back to Goon School - particularly if he doesn't change tack now that he's got three against one. Like Mandross said, he's happy to walk if Kitchener can't handle his employees. Read that both ways.

I haven't had much input in this, mostly because I don't think Nivek would do much until someone actually does something to harm someone else...
but it is entertaining to watch this unfold. When do we roll initiative?

Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

We'll probably have to leave town for good once we brawl in the streets, definitely if we kill one of them. From a town politics point of view, no one will take our side over Bertie's.

We can always relocate to the hidden elf village. I'd rather work to appease the druid with the bears than the local sheriff (in the Shire sense) and his I-can't-believe-it's-not-mafia goons.
Besides, that's sort of Paladin's MO. We'll come back later for the burning things down part

Unfortunately, Paladin is more a burn your bridge before you cross it kind of halfling.
