...Hywaywolf, Tannen is called Sergeant by Karl because Tannen has Chainmail armor, and Karl knows that sergeants have good armor, so Karl made Tannen the Sergeant.
Karl's not bright.

Uh... you know that there's no surprise and that our ambush was completely spotted, right?
They didn't fall for our tactics and they saw you guys. I don't think there's a back to be stabbed.
This is a time for missile weapons, I would think.

just because they weren't surprised doesn't mean they see me. and besides, you don't need surprise for backstab. Surprise means they are so startled that they don't get to attack that round and stand flat footed when attacked. They turned away from me toward tannen and karl, and thats enough for a backstab. You are free to use missiles, I wont be too upset if you hit me

Just to clarfy, at the start of the round goblins 1-4 have only noticed Tannen and Karl as they were actively trying to attract the goblins' attention. The others hiding in the shadows south of the short branch tunnel haven't been spotted yet. Goblin 5 hasn't yet made it into the main passage.
(I did experiment with MapTool's lighting options to try and make this more obvious, but on balance it only served to confuse things further).

At Hywaywolf's suggestion, I've created a 'Player Maps and Handouts' topic so that you don't have to trawl back through all the in-game posts to refer to the maps, etc.

Thanks for the clarification.

Doughbert needs a brain transplant. I'm playing him like a 3rd level thief in Solomoriah's game.

the brave foll should have let the others go after gob 5

Yes... first level is a tad scary. Any random stab by an adversary could be a death-blow.

I want a bow. A dagger is a silly range weapon. Short and median throwing range is within most creatures round movement rate so they can melee a knife ranger the same round. I like to be able to back up then fire, back up then fire, back up then fire staying out of their melee range until I back into a wall or fall off a cliff LOL But that would have been a good opportunity to drop my sword and throw a knife if joecarr would allow that in one round.
