Holding a torch, Zilljan will stand as near by to Grace as she wishes so she can continue her thievery skills.

(Or, at least, that's what he is trying to do. It is dark with only a torch, so he could still miss things. But he is trying to be attentive to the other directions. Both with sight and sound.)
Taply looks over the other directions of the intersection. Which beyond what he can only see is darkness despite the torch showing the way. Though the little glow bugs do provide a tiny bit of light, but just not entirely meant to be easy to see further on.

To be clear, the point of Taply's observations is not to really see what is there and check alternatives. It is simply to make sure we, as a group, are not so focused on the main thing that we are surprised by something from a different direction.

So he isn't searching for anything. He's just keeping watch while the others help Grace.

And he isn't wandering off, either. No reason to get eaten when no one would notice. Again, no scouting; just watching.
