Was a little taken aback about infractions resulting in death. Not even the army would kill except desertion or killing fellow soldiers (usually). Still, the thought of having his own cot, good pay and, maybe in time, owning a decent place with a few slaves of his own.
Giving his name simply as Benn, the rogue trails the others to the barracks
Sitting down and looking over to the others, Benn shrugs. "Not sure. Just hope it's not the same Gradren I think it is or I may well be in for a hard time. Beat a Gradren bastard a few years back in dice and he tried to call me out a cheat. Some of my, shall we say "fellows" did not like the calling he was making and left him with a pah-retty nasty scar on his lip and chin. Name's Benn, by the by, though many call me Sable."

After a while, a tall muscular middle aged man with a scar across his lip and chin enters the room. With a deep voice, "I am Captain Gradren, there won't be any welcome to the Irregulars, because you aren't heroes. You are here to get a job done, period. No questions asked, the only thing that matters is the end result."
"If you survive the first mission, you will be placed on probationary status. if you survive further missions, rate of pay and fringe benefits will improve. As of right now, pay is at twenty five gold pieces a month with room and board, plus a share of any thing considered loot. Any equipment you made need within reason will be provided, along with special training. The downside is you are on call permanently. You must keep us advised of your whearabouts at all times."
"Some simple rules to live by;
Never discuss Irregular business with anyone that doesn't need to know, ever or at all.
Never reveal your true identity.
Always help another Irregular as long as it doesn't compromise your mission.
Never betray the Irregulars."
"The last one is very important."
"You will have the right to refuse a mission, but only once. You can always ask
for more help."
"You are considered special agents of Ravenstone, while technically you could kill anyone you wanted, abuse will not be tolerated."
"Any questions?"

Sergeant Lasko opens the door to the barracks while escorting another wanabee "Irregular".
Lazio grunts out "Captain another floater here punctuality not being his best trait, his name is Lazrin.

Lazrin hesitantly sits next to Vrak.
"Hello sir, so sorry for my tardiness, I had a slight problem getting my medallion assigned. Thanks to Mrs.Belot's patience I should be all set now."

Tam gives the latecomer only a brief glance.
He does in fact have a question for the captain.
"Sir, if anybody asks about what we do, what can we tell them?
Given that we actually live in the barracks and all..."
At least, this is not the dull life of drill and chores that he got away from.
But Tam has a feeling that he may actually yearn to be back in the regular army at some point.

Gradren responded, "For now, if anyone asks, tell them you are overpriced mercenaries hired to fill out the regulars and militia. That has an inkling of truth in it. You will eventually develop your own cover stories."

Lazrin perks up-
“Captain Sir, you mentioned special training earlier. Would you happen to know if any of your instructors partake in the teachings of Arcane Magic? I’m not particular a power house in the art of melee combat, as you can probably tell! Or is there a library available to peruse?”

Gradren answers with a slow deliberateness, "We have "advisors" of all sorts, prove your worth and the door of opportunity will be wide open."
"The Countess has put a lot of time and money into this effort, she does not like disappointment but will reward achievement."
"Are there anymore questions?"

Benn grimaces as he notices the man. Cursing his luck, he does his best to stay as quiet and unassuming as possible, listening in as intently as he could (a small issue for a man who has rarely needed to heed the word of anyone in authority). Fiddling with his medallion nervously, "Sable" (as it appeared he would be going by from now on) keep his head low, looking up only to see the mage enter the room.
Not piping up, Sable just glances to the others and wonders if they will continue to torture him by asking questions and keeping Gradren in the room that much longer.

Gradren rumbled,"Apparently that is all, if you need anything at all Corporal Lasko is your point of contact. Now, he will show you to your quarters and the kitchen is open all night, make yourselves available if you leave the barracks."
