BARGUK the HALF-ORC

Barguk was wandering about one day with his Orcish mates when they spotted some kind of craft flying in the sky.

It swooped down and zapped poor Barguk with a beam of purple light. Later, he woke up naked in an underground holding cell. He speaks Orcish and a bit of the human language of his homeland, but doesn't understand a single word that anyone in this strange new world is saying.

After a day or so, an evil gnome guarded by two ogres came to see him and used magic to translate.


You have been chosen by the almighty Arko to fight in his gladiatorial arenas. You will fight until you die or until we free you and return you to your home. If you disobey you will die and we will kidnap more of your worthless people. Have a nice day.


Barguk's first fight is the very next day. He is given a net, and shunted out into an underground arena to face his first opponent.

It's a human, wearing rather nice-looking chain armor, with a sword.

Poison.

Description:
Barguk has dark green skin, blue eyes, and dark blond hair. His body is thick and scarred from the hardships of growing up in an Orcish village typically unaccepting of his kind. His tusks are short, just barely protruding above his bottom lip. Time spent learning from his mother has kept his mind sharp, but his father's cruel lessons have made him, difficult, to say the least.

BARGUK the HALF-ORC vs Smuggy

You come out the southern entrance (arrow) and begin at K02. There is an ogre with a goad and a whip right behind you. Squares are 5', always.

On the eastern side, your opponent appears at S11. There is no one guarding him. He is a human with chain mail and a sword.

He rolls a 4 for initiative. He is going to advance at you, slowly.

The black areas are pillars. The arena is carved out of sandstone. The floor is of fresh sand. There are nasty stains on the walls. There are tiered galleries on all sides. There's only about 30 people in here, human, gnomes ad dwarves. Small amounts of money are changing hands. This is a minor fight in a smaller arena.

You notice that the weapon you were carrying when you were captured hangs by a leather strap from a hook on the southern side of the central pillar, about 15' up. (It could be a battle axe, or a mace. Your choice).

You could get up there with a dexterity roll (roll under). That would be a move action, from the base of the pillar. Or you could just try fighting him with the net?

Roll for initiative and declare your actions.

Barguk approaches the human initiative 4. Once he is within 10' of his opponent he throws his net.

In future, I'd prefer instructions that point to a particular square. That way, I can be sure you actually know how far you can move. If you give me general instructions, your characters might not be able to complete them in a single round. You'll get half-way through what you were trying to do - and then I can come and attack you.

In this case, you can get within 10 feet of the opponent within your movement phase. You move 8 squares. That can get you to R09.

Your attack with the net is a standard attack roll + your dexterity bonus, and +1 for now being in short range. Please make that roll!

He is in chain mail, but that won't count for the net. So his AC will be 12 - +1 for his dex bonus, and +1 for his defensive specialisation.

Well, that's a shame.

The fighter in chain mail laughs contemptuously and moves forward to attack you. He moves into R10 and swings his sword at you.

He rolls a 17 and hits you. You take 6 hit points!

I notice that you rolled a 6 for hit points but didn't add your constitution bonus of +2. By my calculation you should actually have 8 hit points, meaning 2 left.

He rolls a 4 for initiative. Please roll for initiative. If you win, you may act first.

The net is in R11. He is in R10. You are in R09. So, he is between you and the net.

Roll for initiative and review your combat options in the rules. Ask me questions of you need to.

Remember in particular that you have been injured, so you can just surrender if you want. Provided the arena judge doesn't decide to kill you anyway, you will live if you surrender.

Things aren't going well for Barguk. He rolls an initiative of 2, so the human goes first.

The human tries to go in for the kill.

He swings and hits (18). He rolls 6 hit points, taking you to to -4.

Please make a save vs death ray, at -4 - but also factoring in any other bonuses you have. If you fail, you die.

(Sorry, this first one has worked out brutally for you. He rolled really well and you missed with the net.)

17-4 = 13! Finally a good roll.

Barguk makes his save.


I forgot to add the bonus +1 for being a Half-Orc, but either way he survived.


In a flash of rage and determination Barguk releases a furious roar. He is downed but not defeated, and hopes his efforts were a enough to keep him alive.
