Yes, there was foreshadowing (if nothing else, the sea elf's admonition and description of powers). I knew it was risky. In the end, I didn't approach it very well. My next step was to have the efreeti cast Phantasmal Force to have a dragon (or something like that) appear and breath fire on them. Imaginary damage, but it could have knocked them out long enough for us to kill them. I probably should have led with that, but I had forgotten that he had that capability until I reviewed the description…but too late. Sigh.

I assume the scrolls are ruined too? If so, what were the spells on them?

Actually, that scroll survived and so did your remaining scroll. I don't know how, but that's what the dice are telling me.

That's a tough one considering loss of a level. It's particularly bad for a Magic User (he would lose his 3rd level spell). And he's lost his spell books. I'll have to chew it over. Of course, that's assuming that he can even be successfully brought back.
