Chapter One: The Star and the Sylvan Sea

Ah Aerth. In merry ol' Angland, King Ithwyrd lies old and feeble on his bed in Lyndon-Upon-Tems. Despite this all is well. The succession is assured and the land prospers. But something is coming that has not been seen since before the fall of the last dragon for it is... the season of the mist.

Joscelin seems a bit nervous when Kynndelic ask his question. After looking behind his back, he start to speak with a low voice : "I don't know why, but I feel I can trust you all. All these lies are starting to be heavy on my shoulders. I'm here for adventure, but a bit because I was forced to. I was a servant for a rich baron, but I decided to quit this life, "borrowing" a few items from my employer. That being said, I'm now a wanted man in my native land, and my vagrancy led me here...".

"I..." Elizabeth stops, then restarts. "Escort duty. King Ithwyrd is forming a marcher lordship around Abertawe, and William and I are to escort the new Lordship and his retinue from Caerton back to Abertawe."

A sad smile plays across Kynndelic's face:"And I... Well, ever since the death of my brother Guri I haven't been able to bear the life at my home sidhe, Caer Aranrot. My people seem to me too complacent now. So I left to see how other races live and maybe learn something."

I turn to Kynndelic- "At least you had a brother" Alrone gives a subdued chuckle "The experience of loss must be bitter that's why I say separate your self from things. This world seems almost too carefree, wouldn't the rest of you agree?"

I (Squire William) have been looking anxious at the talk of mist, but really no more anxious than I have been the entire journey.

Captain, how long is it until we reach Caerton? And, has any of this mist been seen anywhere near our route? If I am to be brave against danger, I'd much rather do it with my feet on the ground.

After having said that I'll go and teach the half orc some table manners, if he'll let me.

Good sir, the fork is used between the fingers, not clenched in the fist. I know it seems harder at first but its easier in the long run.

"Captain, talking about that mist or whatever you call it, have you ever witnessed it with your own eyes ? I don't want to sound arrogant, but I am more of the skeptical kind. To me, it doesn't seem to be much more than an old fable for scaring kids"

The Captain gives William a nod and says, "We should sight Caerton in two days. As for fighting...give me a deck under my feet any day though I will admit that most landsmen would feel as you do. As to the Mist...I have heard that it has been sighted a short distance from our port of call."

Looking at the self proclaimed thief, Captain Galway gives him a slight reproving shake of the head but then smiles, winks, and says, "Grim times may be closer than you think...Joscelin was it?...yes. However, to answer your question, no I have not seen these Mists with my own eyes. I have spoken with Captains whose word I would trust with my life and the life of my crew. I have no doubt that the Mist exists and that it has been spreading over the face of Aerth since last Yuletide. It seems an ill wind that the Mists, from all accounts began at the Great Maelstrom and spread first over the Dragon Isles and thence over the whole of the old Wraithen Empire. But enough of this gloom. Steward, my compliments to the Bosun and have him send the minstrels in."

At that the Captain sat back in his chair, his face half hidden in the shadows cast by the single lantern.

The minstrels came in due time and immediately struck up many a merry tune to pass the evening with cheer.

The next day dawns bright and the Sylvan Sea has made good time.

Once the sun is up, and if the seas are not too rough, I will go above deck and try to reassure myself that land can be seen off to our starboard - a term for the 'right side of the ship' that I learned from one of the sailors, just yesterday.

If land can be seen, I will hover about near the tender boats, making sure that Elizabeth and I would be first aboard if the main ship starts to founder.

All the while keeping an anxious eye out for mist, and large sea serpents.

If the land cannot be seen and we are completely out in the open ocean I will scuttle back below deck, unless there is any other reason to be above.

When William gets topside, he finds Elizabeth already awake and looking toward the shore. "Good morning to you, William."
...
"No, not seasick. I didn't sleep very well last night. I'm still having those dreams. Heh." She attempts a smile. "I should probably see a cleric when we get to Caerton. Maybe that brawl at the Flying Pig Pub messed me up more than I thought." She flips an errant lock of red hair out of her eyes. "I don't know about you, but I'll be happy when we get back on shore. I don't mind a day fishing, but I do like a solid floor to sleep on."

Kynndelic wakes up early but spends part of his morning studying his spellbook.
Hearing footsteps and voices on the deck he decides to go up, looking for some fresh air.
