Hyway,

I am, of course, taking into account both rules and what you said Edward would do.

In my post I guess I forgot to explicitly say that the insect creature attacked and would have hit Edward if he had not defended himself. Sorry. I thought that was implied by their all moving towards the party and drawing their weapons in the previous post.

Edward, therefore, in having no choice but to defend himself smashed his shovel down. Unfortunately for Edward he had no idea that the ant creatures are more susceptible to crushing damage than edged so it had unfortunate consequences.

I guess another thing at issue here is the concept of defense. I have some training in formal fencing and was on a fencing team. I also LARP. This boils down to how I define defense. Defense is not initiating an attack but holding back until it's obvious the opponent will attack you. Once that opponent attacks it is always the best move to counter attack if possible and make it so that the opponent can't attack you again. Relying solely on parrying is an open invitation for a quick demise as an opponent will then have more attack options open to them and the defender less. If a first level character waits until he is actually hit in order to counter attack then chances are very good that he won't survive in order to attack in turn.

If you feel strongly about this call I can rewrite my post but I took into account that Edward wouldn't wait. There is a good chance that the Druid will be hit and killed in that situation however. Not certain but a good chance.

Let me know k?

What did you have in mind? The answer is probably no since you aren't a fighting type. But...fiat gives me leeway to both limit and to give room to players.

He means, can he dual wield his sticks well? Anyone can put sticks in each hand and flail wildly like a scarecrow in the wind. ;)

Its already happened so no sense changing it.

Edward is a gardener. He is a gentle, simple soul with a grotesque, by human standards, exterior. He has spent his life cloistered within the church. He has never killed anyone or even really hurt anyone on purpose. He has the shovel because its been a part of who he is all his life. Its almost a natural extension of his body. Its a tool he uses to tend to plants, flowers, trees, etc. He isn't trained in war or fencing. When the ant-thing attacked all he knew, and wanted, to do was to keep the the shovel between him and his attacker, to dodge around, block blows until this craziness stopped. But it appears when he was swinging the shovel over to block a blow the ant-thing actually moved into the block and had his head crushed. Edward is devastated.
