OOC Thread

Ah Aerth. In merry ol' Angland, King Ithwyrd lies old and feeble on his bed in Lyndon-Upon-Tems. Despite this all is well. The succession is assured and the land prospers. But something is coming that has not been seen since before the fall of the last dragon for it is... the season of the mist.

But by all means enjoy your magickal peanut butter chicken sates.

Is it night time up above, or did we spend a night in Caerton? I kinda lost track.

Will wants to do his journal at some point soon but we'd need to take a break. As far as I know it is still January the 4th - we got to Caerton this morning, and are in the tunnels by the evening. Correct?

We slept the night (except Elizabeth, who was busy evacuating the town) and started the next morning.

Erm...you spent one night in Caerton. The party then had to wait for Joscelin to go do his thing at the Tinder and Tallow in the early evening. Somewhere in there he met up with the party before disappearing on a mission of his own and Shaha then took the party to the tunnel entrance.

Just a kindly reminder of the Rules and the exceptions I allowed at the outset.

I allowed you to choose any character and class from any supplement. This did not imply that I was allowing all supplemental rules unless I specified specifically that they would be used.

The main Rule in question here, however, is the one of saying that when the game starts all books should be closed and forgotten.

I strongly believe in DM fiat and the concept that the rules are guidelines not laws.

To me, one of the core concepts of OSR is that in the earliest of days the players did not know the rules and the DMs took care of all mechanics, hidden from view. This freed the players to imagine themselves in the world they were playing in. It gave them a sense of not knowing what would happen next. Of having to think on their feet and taking chances. It is this kind of play that I'm trying to foster here.

Don't try to think of this campaign in terms of mechanics. Please. Place your trust in me to play fairly and instead spend your thought on imagination and what you think of your character as doing in any given situation.

I ask your indulgence if this kind of play seems arbitrary or ill conceived or even downright wrong.

Thanks. :D

So what you're saying is that even though it's technically impossible, my paladin can also get weapon specialization and cast level 7 cleric spells even though the rulebooks don't allow it? :D  8-)

I found this hilarious too. I didn't know that Alrone knew the mating rituals of these ant-men so well!

The Lady in Black sits forward on her throne and lowers her head in her hands and you hear what appears to be a long sigh.

I understand what you are saying here, but you have to have some rules even if they are kept in the background and on the downlow. In both methods of game style I stated that Edward would not attack. In roleplay, I showed that Edward did not want to do harm and would only use his shovel to defend himself. And in rules play, I wondered if we were using defensive fighting rules that gave a bonus to ac if I didn't try to hit the attacker.

But it appears that Edward did indeed do harm. Even worse, he killed a living being. It may be a while before he came come to grips with the idea that he is a murderer. Its gonna affect him badly.

For the record, I have no problem with DM fiat. Its why I play old school, especially BFRPG. But that wasn't actually DM fiat, that was actually making my PC do something he didn't want to do.
