OOC Thread

Ah Aerth. In merry ol' Angland, King Ithwyrd lies old and feeble on his bed in Lyndon-Upon-Tems. Despite this all is well. The succession is assured and the land prospers. But something is coming that has not been seen since before the fall of the last dragon for it is... the season of the mist.

I'm starting to get the idea that people aren't reading all of my posts. Either that or they are not understanding them or just ignoring them.

Is it that I've gone outside the bounds of what you all are normally expecting in a PBP as far as how much I'm asking you to read or that you prefer to not to have to roleplay?

Being in a city almost by definition requires roleplay. I would almost say that playing a roleplaying game requires roleplay but who knows maybe I'm wrong about that.

For me, doing a city type campaign is an enormous amount of work which, if characters are not going to roleplay and are just going to short hand stuff makes no sense for me to continue doing. So this leaves me with my next question.

If I start up another campaign that is more focused down to a more linear quest type format would you prefer that? For me it would be easier to run and I'm beginning to gather by the style of play of a few of you that shorthand is your preferred style.

So, put your votes and opinions here and we will proceed. If you do vote to continue this particular campaign then please keep in mind that I would expect all my posts to be read in their entirety and I would expect less use of shorthand posting. Thanks.

Just wanted you all to know that I am grateful to you for playing in this PBP so far. It's forced me to be creative and it's helped me to rediscover that I enjoy being creative. So, again, thank you very much! :D

It might just be PbP style than anything else. Roleplaying in PbP requires a lot of interaction, which means frequent but short posts. You probably don't want us assuming what the NPCs will do. :) So (for example), Elizabeth is waiting for the maids to depart or challenge her impropriety, William has a plan of what he wants to do in the town (but can't state that will actually happen), and Edward is happily waiting for time to pass (which means he's either waiting for Elizabeth and William to fast forward into his time) before he can roleplay with something more than a potted plant.

I agree with what Woe said above. The issue for me has been that there is no set period of time that our posts are supposed to represent. Some people are posting about ten minute intervals, others about things that would take all day. It makes it hard to coordinate everyone and that makes it hard to write posts that actually achieve something in game.

Can I suggest that you (Mint) ask for pretty specific actions, for set periods of time?

It will take half an hour to get to the Inn. What are you doing on the way?
You have a day in Caerton. What do you all do during that day?
What do you all do for the next ten minutes after discovering Shaha's condition?

Stuff like that. That way, we can all respond to your question, and then you can tell us all what happens as a result of our actions in that space of time. (Also, it will force people to read your posts, rather than just writing about what we want to do. ;) )

Also, I didn't realize you were expecting us to RP in every post, and initially you said that you didn't expect detailed posts every day, you just wanted something to keep the ball rolling. I'm not sure I can keep playing if you want RP posts every day. It's partly the time, but it's also that I can't always RP everything, and don't really want to - sometimes shorthand suits what I want to say and do, if it is more mundane stuff.

My preference would be to keep playing, but fast forward through shopping and other set up stuff, and get us underground. Let's have some action, and then we can RP setting up a base once we come back up again.

but as soon as I posted that I see you have opened up a role play post for my shopping trip!

OK, I'll go with it! But I'd hope to make this pretty quick. I believe Hyway just added some items, and I wanted to do the same.

True I did say that sometimes only a line would be required so I stand corrected.

You never know when doing something simple like going to a shop and buying something will land you in an event or put you in a position to find a clue or meet an NPC that has something useful to say or a part to play down the road. If I fast forward to only the significant parts that gives away that a part is, well, significant in some way. Neh?

To me rpg games consist of more than just hack and slash. There should be clues, puzzles, plots, traps, motivations, etc etc. If it was just hack and slash a board game like Talisman would suffice or warhammer if more nitty gritty is desired.

If you all want just hack and slash, death and blood, mayhem and dismemberment I can always accommodate you though there would have to be a significant change in the campaign.

Your input please.

Fair point about 'not knowing if things are significant'.

But, I didn't say I just wanted combat. Really what I am saying is, there is no better way to kick off a campaign that to have some immediate action. It just makes things gel. RP and back-story have much more meaning once a few dice have been thrown.

It doesn't even need to be combat action, either. Combat is a common option because it is turn based and everyone acts in a set order, so everyone stays focused. But, turn-based exploration would do just as well.

(I do like combat though. Not gonna lie.)
