SerGavin wrote:true night falls. as the snow collects deep outside, wolves howl at the full moon and a small fire crackles in the grate of your small room. even so it is little above freezing. what glass there is in the small window is encased in an inch of ice. your'e breaths crystallises in front of you and you thank every god you ever heard of for the room and fire. Luckily deep in your blankets you are warm and extremely fatigued from the long and arduous journey behind you, Simon and Yon quickly and peacefully fall asleep in their makeshift beds while Reese watches, a silent sentinel in the night as one by one the small candles flicker and die, leaving only the glowing embers in front of the fireplace to dimly illuminate the room.

The bed Reese lies on is made of crudely fitted wood but piled high with warm furs mostly cattle or wild animal hides such as elk or fox but a large wolf skin warm and soft lines the bottom underneath the furs. the door Reese watches is heavy northern oak pine, an oddly dark hardwood found only in climes as northerly as these, it is said that ice freezes in the xylem every night and melts in the day, compacting the wood making it denser and more sturdy, giving a pine the properties and colouration of more southerly tree species, it is a dark wooden brown, nearly black and smooth, bolted with heavy iron supports attached to heavy hinges that frame two large brackets, across which lies a heavy beam of the same material. it is set into a wall of pale granite known by Reese to have been imported north from a quarry in north west Raccoa due to work like quarrying being incredibly difficult this far north due to the tools being more brittle due to the cold. the hinges are set into the wall via heavy iron bolts possibly set into the granite by a reverse threading method used by most smiths using pulleys and horse power.

Reese estimates the walls of the room to be about 2' thick and lined with furs and animal hides on the inside. a small rectangular window is set into the wall about a metre above the bed. the room is quite large for tavern board and easily houses three although Simon and Yons bedding is considerably less comfortable than Reese's

The room is filled with the heavy pungent smell of raw animal hides filling the nostrils and filling the air as much to almost have a tangible physical presence in the room and smoke from the fire and candles drifts lazily through the cold air intermingling with the smell of the hides and creating a sharp but not unpleasant aroma.

The only sounds to be heard are the gentle crackling of the dying embers in the fireplace and the slight stuttering snores of simon which to Reese sound very peculiar and slightly amusing.

As her watch extends late into the small hours of the morning, fatigue and the encroach of sleep eventually overcome her and Reese falls into a deep and fulfilling sleep.
OOC, By Gods man that was well written. Thank you.

You listen intently at the door but hear nothing. all is quiet... to quiet. especially for a tavern as busy as this one had been the night before. the connotations of this race through each of your minds. something suspicious is afoot.
Reese wipes the sleep from her eyes and curses herself for falling asleep.Simon, Yon.. wake up. Something is amiss here. It's too damn quiet for this hour in an inn that does any kind of good business. she whispers as she wakes her companions.

Gathering her gear and adjusting things she waits for the cute fighter with the stutter and the aloof paladin to rouse and prepare themselves.

Simon yawns and sits up he looks out the window, "Da-da-damn it's c-c-cold.", He mutters quietly, He sits still listening. "Y-you're ri-ri-right it is t-t-too qu-quiet." He grabs his gear, strapping on his sword. He looks at the shield, shrugs and slings it on his back. "Wha-wha-what d-d-do you th-th-think hap-p-ppened?"

Yon feels relaxed and ready to move, the sudden wake up doesn't permit him to thank the Lady in an appropriate way for this new day She conceded him.
Reese, what do you mean? I can't listen noises outside, are we alone in the inn? That seems so strange, why only us? Why nobody alerted us in some ways?.. If something strange happened, we should have listened... Were we all sleeping so deep?
Taking his sword by the hilt, Yon opened the door...

Reese looks to her companions and blushes a bit and whispers. Hey.... I'm sorry I was so paranoid last night, won't happen again. I'm just out of my element in a city or town. Too many people. Seeing that Yon is opening the door she'll arm her bow and with a quick glance at Simon step back and let them lead the way into the hallway.

Simon will take the lead he walks through the inn carefully checking the other rooms as he walks by. He will walk into the common room keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.

As you open the door the sheer silence of the outside sends shivers down your spine. There is nothing to be heard. Not a whisper not a noise. The air feels heavy and cloyed around you and the cold is biting and sharp. small panes of ice cling to the stone walls and dagger like icicles hang from the ceiling. As you exhale clouds of small icy particles drift through the air, and not like any of you have seen before, the breath crystallises and drops to the floor before your very eyes. A thin layer of frost coats everything in the corridor in a thin white blanket and as you tenderly walk throng it you leave perfect footprints along the ragged carpet.

Snowflakes drift past you as you walk down the corridor streaming in eagerly from the door furthest down the corridor to the right the door wide open. As you proceed further down the corridor you notice a thin red line of ice trailing past the open door and assumedly down the stairs. On the wall starkly contrasting the delicate white patina formed on the stone is a dark red handprint frozen in place surrounded by a seemingly random series of smaller patches of the same colour.

None of the doors in the corridor are locked and as you look inside them they are empty but lived in. The beds unmade and the hearth full of ashes. Various belongings are scattered throughout the rooms some stained with what you now realise is blood yet the layer of frost is undisturbed. As you approach the last door you catch your foot on something. Inspecting it, it appears to be a severed human hand, black from the cold and frozen stiff.

Warily you approach the last room and as you approach the door and look inside you see that the entire back wall is gone and the room is empty. Bare of any furnishings, no rubble litters the ground and ice covers every surface.

Looking out of the opening where the wall used to be you see only the frozen forest beyond and a thin trail as if something heavy had recently been dragged along it not yet claimed by the snow with a small smattering of red.

You hear a faint noise from downstairs.

Simon gasps when his foot hits the severed head, He stares at it unsure if he should say something or what. He closes his eyes, shaking his head slightly as if to clear away a dream, He keeps moving down the hall his eyes locked ahead, Not looking to either side. He hears the sound from downstairs and tenses up. He looks back at Reese "W-w-would you mi-mi-mind t-t-taking th-th-the fr-fr-front th-this um... m-m-mess is ge-ge-getting t-t-to m-m-me."

Yon tightened his grip on the sword. The Lady spared us from something terrible this night, Her protection is such a great boon... Anyway, maybe there is a deeper reason in this, maybe we will have a crucial role in all this mess. Only Lady knows.
Yon gazed at the broken wall, he felt the Lady with him, but he also was grateful to share this part of his life with his companions, he thought they were the right people for this kind of businesses...
I suggest to slowly go downstairs, I'm not a sneaky man, maybe Reese could lead? Let stay very close together.
Yon then listened carefully to the faint noises coming from downstairs.
