You all advance slowly up the stairs taking every precaution possible against danger. The floorboards creak and as you near the top you notice that some of the upper stairs are slick and stained red. You reach the top and a grisly vista spreads out before you. the floor, the walls and everything in between are absolutely drenched in blood and gristle. There are body's strewn all across the floor, or at least bits of the body are are, some belonging to the mercenary's others to people you have not seen before. most probably villagers. You see the tavern owner slumped up against one wall and a child's body, with the head nowhere to be seen impaled by a support beam that has been ripped from the ceiling. There are deep gouges in all the body's but oddly not encrusted with blood. The door has been left wide open, in fact right off their hinges, one is lying just outside the building, the other is halfway through the bar. A table, dead in the centre of the room has a crude axe planted in the middle almost splitting the inch thick wood in two an note dangling from the haft, written on what appears to be some sort of leather. Most of the blood is frozen and slippery rather than slick so you assume it happened at least a few hours ago, although with the door wide open it could have been only a few minutes. You have a very limited view of the world outside, either from the, now open, doorway or various sections where the wall has literally been ripped out but you can see that the village is in a similar state of disarray.

Kiri swears audibly, and then realising, whispers: "What in the seven hells could have done something like this? Everybody, be on your guard, something seems not quite right. " then turns to the rest of the party...

Simon gasps at the sight of the carnage his face as white as the snow outside. He turns and follows Aaron downstairs. He shoulders his pack and goes back upstairs. He quickly crosses the room and looks outside at the rest of the village.

Hemmet edges up the stairs with both hands on his staff, pointing forward with his spell book in his satchel.
As he reaches the top he takes one look at the horrific mess and says in a more hushed tone
"Who...or what could have done this. What manner of horrific devilry is at work here?"

He looks over to Simon with a horrified but yet puzzled expression on his face perhaps seeking some respite in another's ideals.

Taking care not to slip on the frozen blood, Aaron begins to examine the area. As he looks around the room, he can't she the feeling that there is something odd about the body's.

He bends down and examines one closely, keeping his weapon in hand.

After going back down stairs and gathering all her gear (and putting on her armor) Reese will return to the upper level and take up an over-watch position that gives her a clear, or as clear as possible, view of the mess.

Upon closer inspection of the corpse you can see that although the body's chest has been ripped apart by some sort of claws, they were not, in fact, what killed it.you notice this due to the lack of blood around the wounds and the way that the corpse looks surprised or dazed an expression that would be very unlikely had a wild beast done this. After a bit more inspection you see that what actually killed it was two round holes, one in the side of the head and one going through the heart. Due to the depth and thickness of the holes you believe that it was two very accurate shots from a crossbow that killed this man. The bolts must then have been removed and the claw marks made artificially.

armed with this knowledge, you can now see that everyone in the tavern was killed in a similar way.

"Wh-what d-d-do you th-think happened Aaron?" Simon didn't want to get close to the bodies. In truth he was a little frightened by them as he had never really seen a dead body before. Let alone a lot of them that had been brutally murdered.
