The lands of Racoa and Kardren are lightly populated but enormous countries located in the most northerly reaches of the world, the two last bastions of humanity against the cold. beyond which nothing human survives. They border each other only in a few places, all some of the least populated in either country. Everywhere else they are separated by a great sprawling band of mountains that crown the world, the Veil, a hundred miles where it is most thin, making war almost impossible as only a few paths, and treacherous ones at that, allow for travel between the two nations. the widest of which being fiercely guarded by both sides. it is possible to trade but taxes dissuade the practice and both nations are almost constantly at each others throats, over the rights to deep reserves of gold, silver and iron currently untapped due to neither side having made a move for them planning attacks and counter attacks as they suspiciously watch their neighbours and plot...

On Kardrens side of the border lies the white forest by far the largest forest in the country, six hundred miles wide and three hundred long, it's a great expanse of tall silent pines and frozen rivers. it's people are hard and tough having to fight for existence every day of their lives. They are protected by Kardrens northern rangers a volunteer force of hunters, trackers and soldiers that keep the few existing roads safe from bandits, goblins and all manner of dangers. Well, at least on one side of the river. The white forest is split in two by a deep fast flowing river originating from somewhere inside the Veil. The river called the white river by most extends nearly fifteen hundred miles down though Kardren before emptying into the ocean. Kardrens capital is built along its banks and it breaths life into many many miles of farmland. In the white forest the river divides the east side containing both the border with Racoa and the only two permanent settlements in the entire forest and the west side. which is completely overrun with wild creatures and things of a more mysterious nature. The white forest is located at about three thousand meters above sea level and for new comers the air is thin and hard to breath.

Kardren was first settled what is thought to be a thousand years ago by refugees fleeing a war in the south. since then they have grown into a diverse culture promoting the importance of the individual. The country is very rich in mineral reserves and natural defences and some of the western cities lead the world in technological and magical advancement. Kardren is ruled by a semi corrupt council consisting of three hundred representatives from all over the country. ruled over by the High Council who are elected once every ten years. the High Council consists of five members. The Masters of, Trade, Law, Tax and War. Presiding over them is the Grand Councillor who carrys two votes instead of the normal one. Tax and law are rumoured to be highly corrupt but nothing has ever been brought to the council as they are extremely wealthy merchants both and heads of two of the most powerful family's in the nation. their influence only not felt in places like the white forest on the very edge of the country. Kardren is very lightly populated only about one and a half million with one in every hundred a dwarf, one in every five hundred a halfling, one in every eight hundred a gnome and one in every thousand an elf.

The Racoan Empire is a much more warlike state exercising military might through strength in numbers everywhere they go. Racoa is ruled over by the Emperor Maxim Alexander the XXVIII a ruthless and cunning dictator who cares more for land power and glory than he does for his people. (you only know this from what people in Kardren have told you). Emperor Maxim is said to be an imposing figure on the battlefield always leading his armies to war personally. he encourages his underlings to fight for his favour and as a result politics in Racoa are a confusing mass of suck ups and flatterers. Racoa and its territories are not rich in resources but in people having an enormous population and as a result an enormous amount of poverty. Racoa was founded several thousand years ago, by whom, nobody knows, and has a rich and colourful history. ranging from crusades to coups to civil war and back again. It is only the strength and cunning of the emperor that keeps the country together and without a son it will likely collapse into civil war, however maxim is in his mid twenties and is unlikely to die any time soon having pretty much run the empire from the age of thirteen. Racoa has a population of around four million with one in every five hundred a dwarf, one in every two thousand a halfling, one in every five thousand a gnome and one in every ten thousand an elf.

Kardren is the more northerly of the two as its northern extremities reach far into the mountains through deep valleys and the great white forest. both country's borders are almost constantly covered In a blanket of deep snow. with Racoa becoming more temperate towards the south and Kardren is like that everywhere as the temperature never strays above freezing. The local wildlife consist mainly of Elk, rabbits, brown squirrels rats, bears, wolves, oxen and foxes and the same goes for Racoa. Beyond in the farthest north: snow tigers and other such creatures prowl the lands. only very rarely intruding on civilization a story to scare children most believe them to be, but they are out there in the tundras and mountains, along with other things Older things and more dangerous things.
