Kilian and the dogs will sniff and poke. Is it a hole that leads to a tunnel/cavern, or is it a sunken hole where the group should create makeshift shovels?

Kilian and the Dogs. Sounds like a punk band.

Kilian and the dogs have a good look at the area. It seems a bit unlikely that it goes down to a cavern. Kilian thinks it looks more like something has been buried here.

"Hmpf. Dat could be sum minor ecksvacatin' to git all did dirt cleared out. Methinks dig it up in de morning, affter a good meal an' coffee." says Kilian. "I want time to make better digging tools than swords anywho."

Party is a bit tired and not looking forward to starting a major excavation at dusk. Why major? Kilian is present, and his "just a minor excavation" comment wasn't believed. Hopefully it isn't a wight and this was our last chance to catch it unawares.

You settle in for the night with guards on patrol so you can see the river, the stairs, and the digging area at regular intervals.

During the night - - someone thinks they might have spotted one of the dark shadow bird creatures flying about at the top of one of the wild trees that ring the castle.

That was during the final watch when the dawn was just breaking.

Do you investigate? If not, night is over and we are on a new day. What do you do?

The spotter will mark the area in which the helhawk is flying, but not investigate. The successive guards will look in that area to see if they can learn anything more, but not investigate either.

Since nothing else happens in the evening, they'll start first with the hole. Kilian will have made some digging implements by now so the party doesn't have to dig with swords. Does it look like whatever was hidden has already been undug, and any idea how long ago?

I'm sure that the helhawks and whomping willows are both level 0 monsters and you're having a wonderful time with me avoiding such pushovers.

Kilian can't tell anything at all other than what I already said. In fact he's lucky to have spotted it in the first place. Everyone else can see nothing.

Digging with swords, hands, water from the stream, etc....you manage to make some progress within an hour and it's easier than Kilian thought. He's quite certain this was a pit dig a rather long time ago and then refilled.

At the hour mark, you come upon some scraps of leather, and then whoever is digging spots an old coin, of the Brant type, which may once have been contained in a leather bag.

At this point, a group of the "hellhawks" as you call them come flying out of the treeline towards you and look like they are going to attack you.

Please nominate who was in the hole, and state what everyone else in the group does in the round during which they fly at you. Effectively, you get a free round, then we roll for initiative.

Oops! I thought the 'hawks were only nocturnal. Silly me and my own generalizations! :o

Using the random number generator, the person in the hole is Anna!

How many is in the group, and how far away is the party from shelter/fortifications?

You could all run back there in 2 rounds.

Except that Anna will take 3, because she is caught unawares and has to clamber out of the hole and work out what's going on.

They will be at the area of the hole in one round. They are moving at 80' so they will almost certainly chase her down.

Oh well that won't do. That's too much to hope initiative wins, and Anna would be d-e-d alone by herself. Everyone (save Anna, who was holding the shovel, and the dogs for obvious reasons) will let lose a volley of arrows, split evenly between the two. I'm assuming two, though it could easily be two score. I don't recall seeing the count other than 'group'

There are 5 you can see.

Talin and Caradoc both lands "hits" - but the arrows pass straight through the shadowy creatures as they fly towards you and seem to do them no harm at all. They reach you are are now in striking range of you (10').

However, you beat them for initiative and Anna is now out of the hole as they close in on you. You can fight, or try to flee. But they going much faster than you so I can guarantee they will be able to attack you as you flee - especially Kilian, who is the slowest.

Stand firm? Fight? Flee? Or something else?
