Freya can't see much in the direction of the watchtower or Red Oak other than what you already know. No fires or anything at the watchtower, yet.

You find a hollow to make camp, some distance from the road, and you set some traps.

Darkness falls. The moon is decent. Animal noises are heard - wolves, owls, frogs.

Right at the end of Talin's watch you hear the sound of something quite big, moving pretty fast through the woods nearby, to the north of you.

It isn't coming right at you, so if you want to see what it going on, you'll have to stand up and move out towards it. Otherwise, sit tight and hope nothing happens.

Sit tight. Talin can look for tracks in the morning. Which direction is the noise coming from/moving toward?

Sure.

You hear another animal not long after, maybe chasing the first one. This is more fleet of foot and makes less noise but you still manage to hear it.

Animal noises continue but nothing else happens. The wolf calls are a bit eerie.

Next morning you can follow the trail of the boar back to the north west if you want. It looks like it was bleeding. (You roll a 08 on your track roll).

By the way, it looks like rain later today.

Talin will look closer at the tracks to see if he can discern what was chasing the boar. Pretty much, goblin or other? Also, do the wolves sound like wolves or worgs?

The companions break camp. Talin and Freya will tear down the traps and ensure no trace of the night can be found. Same MO as last time -- 3hr/hex searches, and follow the river.

Talin has never heard a worg, to his knowledge. Kilian claims they sound deeper, but he's not sure either.

Goblins are well known for using worgs, though.

You push on. The body of water at the edge of e10 is indeed a lake, stretching into the next hex. You can see it through the trees as you move into the new hex.

Your fairly thorough and careful searching of this hex also reveals what looks like a group of ruined farm buildings, in the centre of the hex.

Most are low walls only, but one has bodgy wooden sides and a badly-made roof of branches and skins. Talin can see fresh tracks in the area, definitely not goblin, something bigger.

You are about 300' feet away when you spy this clutch of buildings in a clearing. If you want to advance let me know. Otherwise you can avoid the place.

(PS - I'm out for the day.)

Charge!

Talin can't identify the tracks, right? We'll investigate this building further. Freya will try to sneak closer to see if the building appears to be occupied. Talin and Kailin will be ready to provide covering fire if necessary. As for Tiana, she'll do what all wizards do -- find a rock to hide behind.

This might change what I do. What is the range of animation? If it's enough where Tiana can animate some things near the building (move furniture, open doors, etc) while under cover, I'll change the plan.

happy easter.

For ease of play I am saying you all get within about 100 feet, no problems. Each square is 10'. The tree cover is patchy, hazel and other scrubby stuff. You are all hiding behind trees right now. You still can't tell if there is anyone in the building but the ground in the area shows definite signs of habitation by something, Talin can't tell what it is.

The range of your spell, incidentally, is 60'. So the elf-mage will have to get closer if she wants to use it.

In this situation I can make a 'move silently' roll for every 30' she moves.

Do you want to proceed with the sneaking plan, now you know the spell range?

Incidentally I am having trouble with campaign cartographer. The grid labels are not appearing as they should. Top axis is A-U and side axis is 1-20, if you need to specify exactly where you want to be.

Yes. We'll head north using the tree cover until we are west of the building, and then Freya will sneak ahead.

OK.

Kinda bad news on that. The first party sneak roll is fine, you move 30' and and get a good look at what is obviously an active dwelling - a big stone pulled up by a fire pit is the main evidence.

But the second is a 00. Birds fly up from a nearby tree as someone steps on a cracking branch. You all try to take cover.

Not long after that the jerry-rigged leather door of the hovel opens up and a very large humanoid emerges. You can't quite see it, because you are now all crouched down in the grass and bushes. It is making a few 'wake-up' grunts and it starts moving around in the clearing.

It hasn't seen you and isn't coming this way.
