Re: Interlude Thread

Post by Woe »

We really should start having the interlude thread as its own... chapter 5.9 :)

The comment about Gareth was because I didn't know of the name of the speaker. Replace Gareth with Ronall and it will probably make more sense in the reading.

Talin will definitely tell Huw to not share this with others -- Emlin knows, but none other -- that the bandits can take the form of weasels. Or that large weasels can take the form of bandits. Or... it's hard to explain. Sometimes they're as large as humans, sometimes as small as weasels. And they have potions which make them invisible, and heal.

Church tomorrow. Both Talin and Kilian will go. Monday will be the winery, and Wednesday the trip to Brant.

Sunday June 30. Church of Manis, Tor Manis, just south of Huw's farm. Vicar Dick in attendance. Congregation 90. Smells very bad and pews could only be more uncomfortable if they had iron spikes in them.

Vicar Dick is new and reads through liturgy like he has never laid eyes on it before. Everyone eyes the dwarf nervously. Nothing actually happens.

Or you could go all the way to Red Oak and have church in the main Church there with Prester Will and see what happens.

You can have picked p as much wine as you like in RO on any day. Use EE for prices and keep track if you have run out of money.

BTW are you going to visit Anna's Dad or leave that one be?

Oh, I was thinking about Red Oak sermons and seeing what Prester Will has in store. Nothing like entering the lion's den, right? :) However, buying a larger drum of wine (2.5gal @ 25gp) will be better in TM and RO, as it wouldn't be good to share too much gold too fast. Kilian is buying it because he's planning on heading north for a bit and wants something to keep him warm while on the road. Why not ale? He's had plenty, and can get plenty more where he's going.

Kilian will take stock of the church and do a quick mental calculation what it'd take to improve the place a bit. Nothing fancy, but adding a bit of light, breeze, and doing something about the pews.

It's 13th century, and awful. The belltower looks like it is about to fall over. Kilian probably thinks knocking it down would the the best solution.

You can get a 25gp barrel of wine at TM and head out into the wilds of Boldenwald on Monday. Who is going? Monday is overcast with patches of sun. You make it to D16 easy enough, past the old monastery / houses. After that I need to know who is there before I tell you what happens.

All wounds are totally healed by this point although you haven't had that much rest. Talin, in particular, has been riding around all over the place one of the Carr's horses. I have assumed the dog is at the farm.

In answer to your question about how secure the farm is - not very. Your valuables are in the cellar. They have one ROR stationed there. That's really it.

That's about 32 gp so far for everything including food for the Carr's. Who had that? It it coming out of treasure? I need a total party wealth figure before the treasure kicks in.

During the journey, the party will make a plan for their time in Brant. Other than Ember, who do they know in Brant?

People to see:
- Ember, who hopefully will know more people
- A quality leatherworker to sew up four wyvern-hide armor
- A quality blacksmith, for special order items
- A cheaper blacksmith, for silvered items
- A herbalist and/or apothecary, to take a look at the plants and the moldy potions
- A sage, to read those runes Tiana copied
- Many merchants -- unless Freya knows one she trusts

Things to do:
- deal with everything on the loot list
- ask Ember about the history of Cruthy
- skill training (level 3, spells, and background skills)

Kilian HP 20/20 AC 19 (18 no shield)

Fido HP 9/9 AC 16

I'll wait to answer these questions til after Nore.

You get to the walls of Nore on Thursday night. These giant-ass walls withstood the deepest push of the goblins invasions, hundreds of years ago. Nowadays the frontier is much further west, as you know.

Image

If you want to go into the main part of Nore to re-provision, you will get stopped at the walls and asked to declare any trade goods, and state your business. You could:

- Get Danys to bribe the gate guards. (He suggests this, 5 gp).
- Say you have found treasure from a mound or something. (It's unusual but not unheard of).
- Say you found it in Boldenald and see what happens. What you have done is not illegal. It just depends on how much attention you want.
- Try to hide the treasure somehow.
- Avoid Nore on a side road and keep going. This means re-provisioning at small towns along the way. No big deal.
- See if you can figure out any other alternatives.

There was an elvish trader in Nore last came you came through, who had contacts up in Yoll. There are also likely to be dwarves, and various other things going on with knights and soldiers. There will be shops, armorers, Inns, etc. It's up to you.

As much as Kilian wants to investigate the ancient tradition of putting stairs on the outside of the fortifications, the party decides to skip Nore and continue on to Brant. Do you mean "provisioning at small towns" (plural) or "provisioning at a small town" (singular)? If skipping means multiple stops, Tiana can always run in without the coach to purchase supplies.

If you're not eating rations, you're resupplying every few days. It's all in the 36 gp. Easy enough to leave the coach outside a town, and walk in and come out again with a backpack full of supplies.

So, you're skipping Nore? Last chance. If so, you spend Thursday July 3rd parked in a laneway. It's pretty nice.

The remainder of the journey gets you to Brant on Sat 11 July. The countryside is increasingly well-developed as you push through, and there are lots of roads and canals, although still lots of small fens, wooded gullies and so forth. Freya and Tiana have been this way before and seen this stuff. Talin gets an increasing sense of deja vu when he looks out the window and sees towns, farms and church steeples that look totally identical to the ones you passed an hour ago. It's like someone has put the terrain on repeat. No hint of bandits, quite a few guard points, milestones, inns, etc. All very civilized and he might think its a bit dull, really.

Provided Frey and Tiana stay out of sight most of the time, no one will look twice at an archer and a dwarf sitting on the front of the coach as you roll along. Roads are good and going is easy.

The driver Danys is a pretty capable fellow underneath his gruff exterior and has been this way quite a few times. He is quite suspicious for the first few days but then warms to you all. You can consider him a loyal allay by the time you leave Nore. He asks for stories about Boldenwald.

PS - I think that shot was taken from the inside, but let's say the outside stairs were added on later... :)

Note - St Sweeney's Festival (midsummers) is technically on July 15-21 but stuff will already be happening in Brant by the time you arrive on the 11th. The coach driver is looking forward to getting there for that.

The elves can keep hoods on when they're outside, which I imagine will be /oh so wonderful/ in the summer. ;)

Boldenwald? The party never mentioned Boldenwald. -sigh- Looks like the party is starting to get a reputation. They'll stick to the basics: death, destruction, and despair; people dying everywhere. That sort of thing. Kilian is the best storyteller so while Danys won't get the full story, he'll get enough to satisfy his curiosity. Let me know if you want me to write such a story up. Otherwise, it'll sound similar to James' dirge or the "public parts" of the various reports to Emlin.

In retrospect... ugh. Midsummer festival will mean less workmen available, shorter hours for guildsmen, inflated prices on purchases, etc. Freya and Kilian thoroughly explore the lack of merits of visiting Brant during Midsummer, until Tiana hushes them with "If you don't want to go to Brant, you can always wait here until we come back this way."

First things first: unless anyone has a better idea about who to see first, Ember first. What happens to the goods while the party is off in the city? Will crime be a problem?
