Re: The Road from Red Oak (chapter 1)

Climb rolls are every 100 feet, unless circumstances change. You'd have to make 1, to get down the wall, then another one (or maybe two) to get over to the tree, and then a third to get back to the wall, and a 4th to get back up the wall.

Yes there is a decent ledge at the right height.

Yes you could probably grapple-hook the tree, and then tie onto it.

It would most likely sway a bit when you landed on it and you'd make noise almost inevitably.

Still no sign of anyone below, noises or anything.

Your climb roll is 80% and this is a rocky cliff so there are handholds. You think you'd be able to scale the wall with no rope. But a lot else could go wrong.

Ok, after much thought by Freya, she decides she doesn't have the equipment -- and possibly the skill -- to pull off such a pilfer. She'll ask Tiana to make a note of the location in her map, and the party will continue back toward Red Oak.

3 EU in D14? Homeward plan is to just march home, no exploration:
C14 B13 A13 (stop for the night)
A12 A11 A10 A09 (home)
Freya HP 24/24 AC 16 (17 two weapons)
Kilian HP 20/20 AC 19 (18 no shield)
Talin HP 29 AC 16
Tiana HP 11 AC 12 SP 8/8
Fido HP 9/9 AC 16
Anna HP 12/12 AC 15 (19 defensively)
Bruce HP 20/20 AC 16 (15 no shield)

3 ep in the unlabelled hex before you turn around.

an ep in c14 - then you meet a grizzly bear, 80' feet away from Kilian at the front of the diamond, rearing up from a scavenged meal and catching sight of you.

The dwarf is actually surprised, because he's too busy thinking about the almighty and had stated to feel as though he was safe.

No one else is surprised and the three of you get an action before it has a move. This an area with some larger trees but quite good visibility underneath so missile weapons are a viable option.

You are not sure what it is going to do. It might run or it might charge you. It's male, probably not quite full grown.

OOC: Somehow the whole "look large, make noise" approach is harder to do when you actually SEE a bear.

Nobody wants to take on a grizzly, and definitely don't want to stay near the bear's kill site. Missile weapons out, but nobody shoots unless the bear charges (not rears, but charges). "Nice bear... keep eating your lunch. Nothing here to eat, not even the dwarf. He tastes worse than he smells." Talin talks to the bear soothingly while the party slowly backs away. Talin and then Freya start waving their arms slowly,

Is there anything to animate and block the bear's view of us? Also, are we downwind of the bear?

No, you are sort of upwind, but the wind isn't that strong and it's another overcast day, a bit muggy.

(Your 'reaction roll' is an 11 out of 12.)

The bear makes a grumbling noise and then keeps looking at you for a bit, then down at its meal. It doesn't charge you.

You can probably avoid it from here if you walk back quite slowly and go a slightly different way. Or you can stay and see what happens. Maybe it's got treasure!

Talin takes one look at the treasure that the bear is snacking on and decides it isn't worth the effort. Talin continues to sweettalk the bear and remind it that rancid dwarf tastes terrible without a lot of lager. The party will attempt to avoid the bear and take the long way if necessary.

Bear avoided. It follows you for about 20' after you exit just to make sure it has seen you off, and then keeps snacking.

B13 - no encounter, 1 EU

A13 you scare the living crap out of a local farmer, by walking over a rise while he is tending to his sheep in an out-lying field. 1EU+

The farmer (Huw Carr) has heard of your exploits, and can tell you that Barkeep Moseley, back in Red Oak, has been running a book on whether you would live.

Odds have been going up (against you) for every day you spent in there.

According to Huw, Moseley stands to lose a fair bit of coin, as you have all come out alive.

Sleep time. You can camp easily out here, in an old barn. It's a 5-hour walk back tomorrow, you should be fine.

Good job.

EXP payout coming soon.

OOC: Too bad Freya didn't bet before she left. It's a no-brainer -- either she'd win or Moseley would have to collect from the underworld.

Freya pulls Huw aside for a minute. "Huw, we still don't comprehend everything we've seen in Boldenwald. One thing is certain though -- we've been living on hard tack and harder beds for a week. If you want to offer us a few days of rest with hot meals and warm, cushioned beds -- and maybe a bath," she adds, glancing at Kilian, "we'll give you some time to place your own wagers."

Either way, looks like fresh ale and warm beds coming soon!

Huw gets the joke and also sees the potential. You still spent the night in the barn but there's a good fire and plenty of other comforts.

Next morning, he heads off into town at dawn with two nephews so they can all place the maximum 5gp bet that you will live.

You wait a few hours before you leave. It starts raining on the way. You get in in late afternoon. You can claim 7.5 gp of Huw's winnings if you like, although you better make it subtle. Either that or you can leave it all to him.

Wrap up - Wed 23 - Tue 29 April: EXPEDITION 1

Total EXP - 685, and 735 for Tiana. This includes EXP I have previously given you so note this down as the total for the whole adventure. It does not include Talin's 10% yet. Nor does it include exp for treasure, which you haven't done anything with so far.

At this rate the thief - and maybe even Kilian - will go up levels during the next mission.

Interlude Thread

Post by Longman »

Interlude 1 - Tuesday April 29.

Sample comments from the people of Red Oak on your return (mostly said to Talin, and Kilian a bit as well).

"You guys are crazy."
"You went all that way for some plants?"
"Moseley is going to lose so much money."
"Prester Will was very worried for your souls. We all prayed for you on Sunday."
"What's it like in there?"
"Can I come next time?"
"Did you actually see any goblins at all?"
"Are there any weirdos living in there? Gypsies and stuff?"

Questions asked to Talin by the Head Ranger, Emlin Moss

"I'd love to know what you found out."
"Can you give us a sketch map and a situation report?"
"Some of the older rangers are a bit jealous but don't take it heart. It's a brave thing you are doing."
"Lucky that bear wasn't a female with cubs, eh?"
"Did you see any sign of humans living in there? Bandits or outcasts? Or, is it just goblins and their friends?"
"Do you think it would be safe for us to come into C10?"

Talin also gets noticeably more admiration from the women folk than before.

The elves get treated with polite caution. Kilian is quite popular but no one asks him too many questions.

How long are you going to hang out in Red Oak for?
