For third level spells, what about Gust of Wind and Tongues as options? Both seem to be plausible for elf magic.

I'm a bit stuck on Fly being two picks (Levitate + Fly). It makes sense logically, but it's the only spell that has a prereq. I know fireball is out of the picture, but would delayed blast fireball require fireball first? Would monster summoning 2 require monster summoning 1 first? I'm curious more about how it's gone over in other campaigns you've run, because it feels alien to me for DnD.

And yes, I'm interested in fly. I'm just trying to wrap my mind around the increased cost (MU2+MU3) for it relative to other MU3 picks.

Hard to say. My RPG life is really picking up lately. I'm in 4 live games and 3 PbP ones. And I run 4 of those in total. But for a long time I wasn't playing at all except with my kids who didn't know what 'normal' D and D was.

When I was DMing a lot in my20s I often used some kind of prerequisite system - for some kinds of mages - especially ones that can develop new spells naturally without learning them, like Tiana can. Floating Disc - Levitate - Fly has been one such progression. Shield - Protection from Missiles - Wall of Force is another. Light - Continual Light is a third.

It has usually been received OK by my players. (For the record, you do have prereqs for a few other spells, I just haven't told you about it. If you did not have Shield, you could not get Protection from Normal Missiles. But you do, so I wasn't going to mention it.)

Incidentally, Wizard Lock is another 2nd level spell you could get. But you'd need Hold Portal first. And, Tongues is not part of Elvish magic, at all. And Gust of Wind is out too but Advanced Animate is capable of doing many similar things.

Yes to the 1st question. I would probably make the levels of Monster Summoning all the same basic spell, and you would get got an increased result as you spent more spell slots on it. So, you wouldn't need to learn it as a new spell. It has never happened before, but now that you have asked me, that's what I'd do.

Just letting you know I may have a new player, Grendelthebrave, a fried of Delver, who has joined form over at RPOL. If he does end up joining - which I hope he does - then I'll have to restructure things a bit so the game board includes threads for him too.

He (?) says he may not be able to post that often, so it would be better to run it as a different group to start with. There's scope for you guys to meet up later.

I think you have done really well as a solo player, and the role-play element is still pretty strong. I think it could work that way with other groups just as well.

Are you thinking about having two subforums, one for him and one for me? You could then post general topics in the top forum and use the two forums to shield our eyes from splot poilers.

And, I'd encourage you to read each others game threads. There are unlikely to be any real splot poilers. It will just help to broaden out knowledge of the world.
