Talin starts counting his copper. Being how he has none, he's not going to be counting very long. :D

50gp is a steal. If Talin can afford it without dipping into death insurance, he'll place an order with the Amazonia tribe for a big-ass forest dog to be delivered when he returns.

BTW, I'm saving for death insurance just in case the unfortunate happens. How much is a raise dead spell? I think I'm underfunding at this point.

Oh -- and I don't mind paying 50gp. Is it ok if it's a better story behind the mutt though, like "bonded from birth but there was that unfortunate incident with the innkeeper's daughter" than placing an order on Amazonia?

Hmm... which might explain why Talin doesn't visit the inn often. The innkeeper was very fond of his stockroom door.

I'll answer all this later. I'll have to look up raise dad ad think about it. I'm pretty sure buying the dog is eating into the life insurance fund though.

You have a total of 6 effective 'hours' of movement, 7 at a pinch, because 3 of you are only moving at 30.

That means you can't do 3 hours in each hex, and then nominate 3 hexes in a day. That's 9 hours and you will get exhausted.

I might have been misreading you - are you nominating 3 hexes for the day, or are you just setting a general course for the next few days?

On this occasion I read it as your course for the day, and allocated 2 hours evenly per hex. It's kinda too late to change it now, because stuff has happened.

In future could you either pick 2 hexes at 3 hours, or, 3 hexes at at 2 hours, or some other combination that adds up to 6 hours. It will save confusion.

I know it seems slow but searching 9 square miles of forest really would take a while.
I'm sorry for causing the confusion, especially since I was nominating three hexes. I meant those as a general course of action and assuming searches in the same hex could span days if needed. Thinking about this in game-world terms, a strict hex approach ends up with six hours and two hexes/day. That's ok by me. But If the party moved faster, they'd have eight hours/day. Where would the extra two hours go if they move slower? The elves get tired from the intensity of the search? The dwarf has more time to bathe, perhaps? :)

If the party's available search time is eight hours, would it be ok to treat the daily rate of 3 hours/hex as 2.5 hexes/day (3+3+1.5) with spillover on the last hex of the current day and the first hex of day+1?

Or if fractions are too problematic, I'll interpret it as long-term encumbrance issues. No armor -> full eight hours/day. Leather armor -> six hours/day. Metal armor -> ??.

But seriously, I'm just trying to understand the mechanics better. I'm ok with two hexes/day of a thorough search and three hexes/day when marking a trail.

Perhaps it would be easier if we referred to them as EXPLORATION UNITS instead of 'hours'.

Your party, based on your level of experience and your movement rate, gets 6 exploration units per day.

A day takes about 8-10 hours of actual time. So as a rough guide, 1 EU = 1.5 hours, at this stage.

I EU gets you through a hex
2 EU gets you a clear trail, and a bit of a look-see
3 EU means you find pretty much everything
4 EU means you start referring to the trees by specific names
5-6 EU means you own the damn place.

I'd really rather not do fractions.

Your EU per day will go up slowly as you advance in levels. The ranger's might progress quite quickly.

Does that help? To me it is a pretty believable mechanic. If you were busting through you could go as far as 21miles in a full day, through quite dense forest, in armor.

I don't think there will ever be a perfectly realistic system. I'm just going for something quick and easy that follows at least some of the BRFP movement rules.

Gotcha! The standard pace will be 3 EU. I'll call out faster/slower explicitly in EU pace.

Cool.

that will mean 2 hexes a day, with very little chance of missing anything, although there is still a chance.

Incidentally Tiana, on her own, would have 8 EU, but if she used the additional ones, it would mean going away from the rest of the party at some point, for maybe a mile or more. I was presuming you did not want to do that.

Based on the way I've been playing, I think:
Talin : Woodscraft, Animal Trainer (Fido!)
Kilian : Engineer (I had to look up abatis too)
Tiana : Cartographer and alchemist
Freya : Woodscraft
