Do thieves know thieves' cant by default, or does it need to be learned?
I'll drop goblin from the ranger and replace it with nothing. Raised by a solitary ranger since birth, Talin hasn't had much opportunity to learn any other languages. A smattering of Elvish, but that's it.

I'm all about the story, not realism. I live in a forest and I'm pretty sure I don't have goblins hunting giant boar here.
I don't see how you could go much higher than your rope length on your own, because you'd have to keep going back down to untie your rope, if you wanted to take it further up the tree / cliff / etc.
Yes, you can do that. You're always tied down. It's extremely slow, but it's much safer than climbing without a safety line. Another approach is doing what loggers do with large trees. You tie the rope around the trunk and flip the rope up as you go, and if you hit a large branch you tie above then untie below. Obviously, this approach works much better with palm trees and limbed redwoods.

A little more on the ranger backstory: Orphaned as a babe by a goblin raid. He was found in the smoldering ruins by a Red Oak ranger, who had lost her family in a similar raid. That's why the goblin animosity.
As for the dwarf, still having some fun with that one but I haven't thought of anything that seems right. Outdrunk by the trapper? Owes a life debt to the mapper? Secretly in love with an elf??!

Yes, thieves have to learn the cant.
Saving the ranger's language is a good idea.

Well, who isn't secretly in love with an elf?
Incidentally have you looked at the rules supplement for scouts?
I think it might be a good fit for Freya. She gets to keep her thief abilities but she gets some outdoor stuff as well. It's not too late to change her if you want to do that. Any time up til you hit 2nd level.
I will be introducing some background skill rules at 2nd level if you make it that far.

If? *gulp*
Thanks, but I'll probably stick with thief. I think the scout supplement is a bit too OP, especially with rangers also in play. To quote Smoot on
another thread:
Scout = all the good of Thief and all the good of Ranger for just the XP of Cleric?
Happy Easter!

No probs.
I guess the thief skills will be good value when you get back to town, as well.

Tiana will be updating her map as well, with notations for the odd-sounding wolves, ogre, etc.

FYI the characters thread is locked, so I can't update the sheets due to fired arrows/bolts lost.

Thanks.
It's unlocked now. I thought that function was just to prevent new posts, not editing old ones.
