Ravoneth does not appear intimidated and remains motionless while watching the scorpion.

we could try to web it, but it might not be the only one in the sand.

Mae decides to see if the scorpion is intelligent-- it wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen in this place. She backs a few feet away from the chest, patting Hermia's arm to get her to lower her sword as she does.

Hermia and Giovanni place themselves between the massive beast and ready their weapons, Ravoneth opts for a calm openhanded stance and steadies herself for the possible combat to come while Opyeen raises his bow and Rykken makes himself mentally ready to cast.

Maephina goes with a differing approach and backs away from the chest tapping Hermia on the arm as she does and advising her friend to lower her weapon.

The scorpion for his part does very little moving. One claw raises and clicks twice *click-click*. The noise alerts something else in the sand and just behind the first scorpion another emerges. A female half again as long as the male in front of her and with dozens of two foot long offspring attached to her back rises from the deeper sand at the rear of the room. Neither seem to be interested in the companions other than they have entered the brooding room and pose a possible threat to their young.

So far it is a stalemate, each waiting for the other to make an aggressive move.

Ok, I suggest that Rykken and I both cast web and try to get them all caught up in it. Kill what ever saves and then grab the chest and get out of here.

or

see if we can tie a rope to the cest someone how and go to the edge of the room and try to pull the chest to us, then if they give chase. cast web in the opening so they cant get through

"I think we can avoid this fight as long as we defer, give the mother a wide berth, and leave."

(DMs note here. The chest is 4'x3' across the top. You still haven't revealed the lock or the hinges and are no where near the bottom of the chest. If what ever is inside has any weight at all then it will take at least two of you to lift it after you've cleared the sand from around it. It will not be as simple as a grab-n-go.)

"why would we want to avoid the fight and leave? any treasure worth having would have already been took if it wasn't guarded. This is how we get what we came for.

Now I don't like the idea of the fighters just standing there to get poked with those stingers, that would be self defeating. But we could back up to the corner and use webs and range weapons for the first few rounds before we have to melee.

we could even spread some oil out to block their passage to us. And we have fireball. that will kill all those little buggers for sure. "

"I too am not interested in killing this scorpion just to see if that chest holds some shiny baubles to be sold at a market. Do you intend to kill everything you meet just for their toils?"
