As the beggar turned thief tries to flee Ravoneth strikes once more. *swing-HACK!* The two handed sword makes contact on the mans hip as the adept swings her sword low and parallel to the ground. Seeming to slow only slightly the sword continues, cleaving through the hip and deep into the pelvis. As the sword comes free the man falls to one side while his left leg falls to the other. The man is well and truly dead without so much as a complaint or twitch. The half elf is free to reclaim her stolen property and clean her bloodied weapon.

Um, that's embarrassing. She didn't actually mean to kill the thief. She's not sure whether to talk to the guards or just pick up her things and move along. Any clues from the locals what she is expected to do next?

(Yeah a nat20 with a two handed sword does some terrible damage.)

After the commotion dies down a trio of city watchmen arrive. A few questions are asked, answered, clarified and statements taken. Ravoneth is then.told she is free to go but advised to try and stay out of further trouble.

She will assure the guards that she means no trouble, nor seeks it. She'll retrieve her belongings (cleaning her sword on the poor corpse's cloak) and continue to the temple of Helm.

As she's cleaning, she'll look at the victim more closely. Any tattoos, cult symbols, etc that make her think this is not an ordinary street thief?

BTW she won't loot the corpse (just in case that wasn't obvious).

As she collects her things Ravoneth looks closely to see if any tattoos or markings stand out. Noting the odd mariner type tattoos here and there she can surmise this man was once a sailor now turned to theft to provide a living. Nothing of note stands out.

Her belongings secure she continues on. Following the directions on the map she is soon at the temple of Helm. Out front is a well built man in plain leather pants and linen shirt. No rank adorns his attire but his attitude speaks of someone who belongs in this place. Noting the slight figure approaching he smiles. I bid thee welcome to Helms Hold fellow practitioner. How might I guide thee in thy quest? His voice is pitched low and still carries well across the entry yard. He seems as if he would be better suited to a battlefield than the tranquil area surrounding the temple.

Ravoneth gives a respectful bow. "Greetings, sir. I am looking for a fellow Pilgrim, and thought he may have come by this way. Perhaps you have seen him?" She gives a quick description of Brother James, leaving out the "gone rogue" part.

He returns the bow. Pleased to meet you. I am Brother Michael, Second Hand of Helm and currently a mere 15th year Scholar. Hmmm.... Tis been some time but we had a young adept from the Quenyar Refuge that matches that description pretty well. He spent some time in the city looking for supplies, or so he said, then one day just stopped coming. One of our brothers mentioned seeing him in a tavern across the city where adventuring types hang out. When brother David questioned him he was told by the young man that he intended to make a quick foray into the caverns beneath the city and "test his mettle" against a real foe or two and perhaps bring up something to prove his worth. It seems the young lad had been listening to stories from the hardened fighters that frequent the area and felt that he didn't measure up or some such nonsense. Brother David? No he's not here. He's gone on a Walking. What's that? Ah a Walking is something we are called to do from time to time. We travel the land with nothing more than we can carry and bring the word of Helm to any and all that will listen. He will return when Helm decrees it so. If asked he gives directions to an inn called The Yawning Portal and the name of Durnan as the proprietor. I offer you Helms Hold this night for rest and refreshment. Our door is open to you for as long as you wish.

"Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Brother Michael. I welcome your offer to stay here for the night, though I would appreciate the opportunity to earn my keep. Surely you have chores or errands that need done." Ravoneth won't ask about an inn as a warm room with a floor is luxurious enough for her, and she doesn't have enough interest in her belongings to warrant a strongbox.

"Brother Michael, do you happen to know which tavern he was at, or how to find these caverns beneath the city?"

The inn is called the Yawning Portal. It is also the location of the only place to get into the caverns as far as I know.
