Perhaps you all see kobolds differently than I do. Kobolds (in the games that I've ran in the past) are the equivalent of Kinder driven to a task by those much stronger and meaner than they are. Kobolds are not inherently evil or devious by nature. They are inquisitive, naive, and easily fooled into a quest or task. Most times they are used as fodder to weaken a foe before the true antagonists join in combat since they breed like rabbits and tend to be easily rounded up in the thousands and driven with threats and violence. (anyone read any Salvatore and his take on Kobolds in the Underdark?)

The best way to describe them here is that they are less than 3' tall, thin and reptilian in nature. The lowest of the low in the goblinoid ranks. Most often scavengers or forced into clean up jobs and risky endeavors while the true powers that be sit back and watch without regard to the little buggers lives. They have the advantage of quick population increase due to the open nature of their breeding and that they can adapt to almost any environment.

Here they are scavengers. Living off of the refuse of others. Mildly intelligent and easily swayed with promise of fortune or payment. They strive to thrive no matter their current lot in life.

you pretty much described them as I see them except that they aren't good natured by their plight in life. If you have the ability to beat them they will be like Gollum and "yes sir, no sir" you graciously, almost nauseatingly so. But if they get a chance to backstab you, run away or turn sides, they will do so without compunction or remorse.

Oh certainly, just I don't think they'll always betray you-- only if they think they'll get a better deal/be part of the winning side. If a Kobold is evil, it's only in a kind of a petty, self-serving, or cowardly way.

The trick is to make sure they feel confident that yours is the winning side.

Edit: I did once have a campaign though in which they had been genetically engineered to automatically gravitate towards and be genuinely loyal to dragons, though.

Sorry it's been so slow lately folks. I've got about 800' of fence to build before we can get our livestock here along with a chicken coop to expand (so our 30+ chickens have room to roam), an aquaponics set up to get designed, built and running so we can have our garden and fish pond running along with our ducks and our BSF bin seeded and producing so that we have natural feed for all the birds. I've been pretty busy. :(

Sweet! I have a much smaller chicken run (9 chickens) and need to fix an outer fence myself, and blowing it off because the part I need to fix isn't the only gap in the fence... it's just the most visible. How high is the fence? Do you need to worry about a lot of predators?

Our fence is only 4' high since we have hardly any predators.

300 kobolds vs one vampire... that will definitely wound him a bit!
