Belle nods to Kerrywyn. Nice to meet you. Then leans in towards Sanzaru I'm thinking Pebbles could sweep this room and find out just about anything about anyone here, he seems to have a gift. Mumford and I could go do some looking outside if you want us too. It might come in handy to have a magic user along to keep me out of trouble. I'd like to point out though that we are new here and are going to be suspect to everyone for a while. If some of us are seen slinking off into the hills there will be some suspicion aroused. We might be better off hanging out in here and buying a few drinks for the locals and plying them subtly for information. That would go a long way to being recognized as a non-threat in the following days. Simple folks like simple pleasures and and gossip, a free drink will be a nice little way to get them relaxed and talking . Just my opinion of course.

Belle will take a cursory look around the room just to be sure she knows where the exits are.

OOC I'd like for the people to be comfortable enough with us that we can come and go as we please. I'm also by no means trying to make decisions for the group, just adding in what I think would work in a back water town on the edge like this.

(ooc: Yall can make all the decisions for me you want. Doesn't mean I am going to follow them LOL. IMO, people should play the class their playing and let the others play the class they chose)

Pebbles asks for a strawberry ale, repacks his pipe and lights it again then returns to his conversation with the villager. "So, shall I take it that you are companionable with those two fellows then? A farmer/fisher and a ruffian could be fine fellows to have in a rough spot. So they are not part of teh town guard or just not on duty? Speaking of that, what can you tell me about the guard. Are you fellows training all the time and have a well stocked armory. I ask, because I expect we'll be coming in to the possession of many weapons and armor that the owner no longer has a need for. Perhaps the Guard would like to purchase them from us? We'll try not to put to many holes in the armor haha, what what."

"Right away!" He hurries away and reappears just a few moments later with a huge loaf of bread and a mug of ale for each of you. "This first round is on the house" he announces. "If you need anything else just let me know."
Woe wrote:OOC: I'm assuming mi'lady is a typo (confusion with apple lane?). Sanzaru is definitely a male dwarf. I have a thing about unbearded female dwarves, and a thing about playing bearded females. :D
OOC: I was referring to Belendithas, not Sanzaru. According to the character sheet, Belendithas, or Belle as she likes to be called is a female. ;)

As the party samples the bread and swigs their ale, Eryl brings them back to the situation at hand. "I'm afraid I don't have a map but Kiint the Leper is arguably the most knowledgeable about these here parts. If you can get him to talk I'm sure he could point you in the right direction."

"As far as the raids, Gritznak's raiding parties vary in size from a handful to just shy of a score but they always seem to be just enough for the situation which is why I suspect a spy but i haven't any proof."

"Our defenses!? OUR DEFENSES?!" He grimaces and you can tell that you've hit a nerve. "We have a militia numbering two score and we haven't been able to preserve our own goods let alone mount any sort of offensive. Gritznak is no ordinary gnoll. He is very clever and extremely mean spirited, even for a gnoll." He drops his voice and continues, "The militia helps keep the hope alive in the townspeople but as much as it shames me to admit it, we are simply out of our league."
The problem with doing something really stupid to impress people is that they may just be impressed by how stupid you really are.

"Gwion is a local who lives here with his wife and daughter. He had a second daughter but she died some years back and he's never quite been the same since. Ian on the other hand only showed up a couple of years ago and spent most of his time in The Empty Flagon until his purse ran dry. Now he lives in an abandoned house on the edge of town. You'll want to keep one hand on your moneybag if you be talkin' to him. Part of the guard?", he chuckles, "No, not them."

"Training, well if you call trying to defend our properties and possessions from Gritznak, then, yes, we're training all the time. We all have livelihoods, families, farms to take care of. Training don't pay any gold and we be strugglin' just to keep what we got. We've accumulated an assortment of weapons and armor but most of it is ill-fitting and passable quality at best."

"so what kind of troops does this Gritsnak have. Are they all gnolls? How are they armed? Are they fierce fighters or do they normally win because they outnumber you?"

Turning to Pebbles So our best bet for info is a leper? Not much you can offer someone in that condition to persuade them to help.

"Eryl, you seem to have a combat background yourself. If we decide to make a stand here in the town, where do we start? We'd need to silence the spy. If we can, Gritznak won't know we're here. That might be all that is needed to turn the tide at the next raid. Do you have any leads on who the spy might be?"

OOC: Partiers, what say you? Should we take the fight to Grit snack first or defend the town at the next attempt? And Pebbles' charms aside, how do we smoke out the spy?

(ooc: it may be a red herring, but I think we need to put a watch on the farmer and the ruffian to see if they do anything odd. Ask around to see what their usual activities are, how often they might leave the town, etc.

I don't know if defending a town is such a wise idea since the best we can hope for is killing griznack. NO loot involved. Not to mention I don't want to be in a stand up fight winner take all. I'd rather take out his gang piecemeal.

We have a few clues if we want to start tracking around the river crossing.

We could hunt up a few npcs to join our party.)

OOC: Laptop died, so using my phone for this. Bear with me and my warpings, and assume all color coding.

OOC: I am treating this as IC b/c I agree.

"I agree. I'd offer to tail the two odd sorts but us Lumbering Anvils aren't known for stealth. If you get them near me, I will know if they have any evil intentions. A solitary elf shouldn't attract any attention if he were to scout the ford and nearby terrain; and fast enough to escape if needed. It's night so we can't do a full assault -- Mumford."

"As for town defense, no loot but we'd get more info. I don't expect tem to leave their camp undefended so we'd have less to fight with more on our side. We have to wait for them to come to us. I don't like that. I don't like not knowing the size of the raid. But I don't like leaving te town defenseless, and definitely don't think we can assault a raider camp -- even with three scouts and a wizard."

"Or were you thinking about sniping the camp? If so, you'd be better off without me. I'm neither fast nor good with a bow."

OOC: I definitely agree to go scout things out, both in town and the ford. I'm just the wrong character to do either.

I don't think town defense is our best option. If we had some idea of when the next raid was going to happen we could hide out in the woods and see who comes and goes, perhaps find out who the spy is. If nothing else we would be able to determine the strength of the raiding party on the way in. If they are as confident as they sound I'd bet they don't even set out pickets or trail blazers. We could then track them to their camp and decide from there. It might be possible to find the camp and then bring the entire town militia with us on a counter attack at the camp and drive ol' Gnoll boy back into his home range. Once he's holed up we could decide on an assault force/plan/thing.
