Damn. I wonder if anyone in town speaks goblin?

"we can take him back to town, or we can just kill him and hope to follow the tracks these ones left back to their lair."

"I think we should take him back to town. We can find someone who speaks Goblin. Fill this one up with a lot of ale and hear the tales he spills. Besides, the lair will still be here tomorrow for us."

The lair will move if it rains?

the tracks leading to the lair will move if it rains. I have no problem with going back to town. I am just pointing out one way to hunt down the lair that is time sensitive. Beating or drinking the location out of the goblin is also an option.

I know. I'm just teasing.
Having a live goblin is a huge asset. We might be able to find tracks, but the goblin knows. We might decipher the message, but the goblin knows. The goblin might also know other story arcs, like the next towns or whether (gnoll) is in league with cultists.
There is a third option too: let him go. Wounded, he can't move fast. Rather than following tracks, follow him.
So I think take him into town, hope someone speaks goblin. Pump him for intelligence then cut him loose. Even a dwarf could follow a bleeding, drunk, hobbled goblin.

Just need to make sure the spy back in the town doesn't find out we ambushed the ambushers or he will know he was made. I am leaning toward the third option, but instead of just releasing him we let him think he has escaped.

Absolutely agree, he "escapes" because his "bonds are loose" while the party is "all looking the other direction"

Add some alcohol to that story, and a dimwitted goblin would probably believe it.
Good point about the spy. What about splitting the party (yeah I know what you think about that) when within sight of town and quietly asking Marshal Whosit whether he knows anyone who speaks goblin?

((I don't mind splitting the party within sight or in town. Just not when out in the wild, but that doesn't mean anyone can't split off if they want to. Just not gonna be me lol))
