You can’t see any pattern or order to the holes. Their placement seems completely random to you. Closer examination of the tracks indicates that there was a group that seemed to be working together as there are prints clustered around each hole. The freshest and last prints though suggest a mass and very hasty exodus from the area. It’s like the group just scattered all of a sudden.

"not sure what we can do here, so we might as well set up the intended ambush." How close are we to the crossing? Is there a good overlook that has an overlook overlooking it?

I agree. While we could be standing here looking over the holes I'd rather be looking over the overlook that we plan to overlook from and trying not to over look anything.

I'm more concerned what they were running from. I'm not good at tracking though so I'll agree we should make for the overlook and think more about this puzzle later.

Not wanting to get sidetracked you decide to turn back to the task at hand. You quickly crest the hill and scout the area. To the south you have a good view of Malforten and to the east the hill slopes down towards the river. The slope is dotted with small clumps of trees and bushes. It is only about a quarter of a mile from here to the river crossing. The top of the hill has a convenient clear area that would be perfect for setting up camp and a lookout. In fact, looking around, it appears that this area has seen its fair share of use.

Pebbles looks around and then says, "Looks like we'll be setting up where others have camped. Perhaps our trap may catch a different game. Ground stake the horse near that spot there and we'll start collecting fuel for the signal fire."
is there a place where archers can set up without being seen by attackers coming up from the river. like a nearby clump of trees, where we can camp out of sight but with 50 yards of the "lookouts"? a secondary consideration will to not be spotted by whoever was digging those holes on the south side of the hill?

Sanzaru rolls his eyes at the halfling's comment, and starts to make a comfortable hidey-hole in the signal fire. His pack will be near where Belle plans to play the decoy, as if to be her pack.

Belle walks up to the little dwarven "signal fire" and pulls out her pipe. Stuffing it full of elven weed and lighting it she takes a long pull. Ffffffffff so now we wait my little anvil? Hope you have the patience.
