"Um, a bear is it? I hope we don't have to harm it."
It's hard to tell whether he's more concerned for the bear or himself.
"Well, I very much doubt it's going to leave if you just ask it nicely" says Dronlan, somewhat exasperated by the youngsters' pacifist tendencies. "Just do whatever needs to be done. If you want my opinion, the thing's a menace and a pest. Best to get rid of it so that we can resume the harvest without the likelihood of any further trouble."

Dronlan reaches for a pouch on his belt and pulls out a handful of sovereigns (30 in total). "Here are some funds so that you can get yourselves equipped for the task in hand. Squinch will be closed now, but you should pay him a visit in the morning before you set off."

"Right, Oolina will be waiting, so is there anything else before I get back home for my dinner?"

"Sheriff, how do we get to the cave?"

"Just head up to the Northern Orchards. If you then carry on a bit further north, you'll reach a craggy ridge. That's where you'll find the cave."

"Anything else?"

[OOC: as locals (more or less) your characters are well aware of how to get to the Northern Orchards - it's a couple of hours hike up North Street from Apple Lane village]

"I am totally ready to get out of this apple-picking nightmare. Guys, what do you think we want to buy from Squinch's?"

OOC: No more questions for the Sheriff from Marcus. Do we still have our old gear?

"What's useful with bears?"

Yes, you still have your armour and weapons from the initiation ceremony.

have we been to the cave before or will we need to scout out the area?

"Maybe we could make a landslide and trap in the bear. We should go look at this cave. What time do you guys want to leave?"

"Let's get to Squinch's as soon as he opens."

OOC: Any ideas for what we should buy?

Both OOC and IC: I have no idea. I'd say rope for sure, because rope is always a good thing to have. Probably some torches too in case we want to go into the cave. I have no idea how big the cave is or whether there are multiple exits or just one. If we could rig a landslide, that'd be a pretty slick way of solving the problem. I don't know if the cave is in the middle of a thick forest (redwoods make great barriers) or a sparse apple orchard (air doesn't make a very good barrier). As for the cave itself, I say that's Filibert's job. He needs to go burgle something for us.

Really, from this point forward, this is a very player-driven adventure - almost sandbox-like. There is no specific right or wrong way to tackle the problem. It's a case of devising a plan and implementing it. So, I'll be here to help you with any questions you may have, as well as to determine the outcomes of your decisions and actions, but it's up to Elena, Filibert and Marcus to keep the adventure moving along at a pace you're comfortable with.

From a playtest perspective, I'm interested in seeing how well BFQ as a ruleset stands up to the unknown, i.e. to whatever the players might throw at it.

Good luck!
